I'm converting an existing machine that'll be doing video editing from a HDD to SSD. The computer will have temp files and project files that take up ~12 gigs all together.

I'm debating whether I should go for a single large 500, two independent 250 drives or two 250 drives that are in RAID 0.

I like the idea of a single drive option (either single drive or RAID 0) because it'll be easier for the editor to work on since everything could just go on the C drive. However, there are two distinct sets of files that could benefit from separation: source videos on one drive, temp files on another.

From what I've already read on the site, RAID 0 will probably be faster than single drive but if one drive fails, there's total data loss on both drives. This is likely to be the case whether I go for a single drive or a RAID 0 configuration so it doesn't make much of a difference.

So, I'm probably going to go with a RAID 0 config unless having two drives with two different tasks is likely to outperform a RAID 0 config.

Final concern. We're likely to upgrade the motherboard in a few months. If I remember right, the RAID configuration is tied to the controller. In my case, the controller will be the one built into the motherboard. Is this still a problem for RAID drives?

Thanks for help!

so raid 0 SSD's is the question here?

Which editing program will you be using?

How much Ram does the system have?

when you change the motherboard you will want to re-do your raid setup and OS anyway. Kind of a normal thing to do.

We're using Adobe CS6 Premiere with 16gb of RAM. So far, RAM hasn't been an issue but when I get a new MB, I might upgrade to 32gb for future projects.

I was hoping to avoid an OS reinstall with the new MB to save time but you're probably right. Dealing with BSOD and other issues won't save time in the long run. Maybe we can delay the SSD a little and accelerate the MB purchase so they'll be done together.

I think that would make sense

migth be worth testing a program called FancyCache . you can allocate Ram to your HDD/SSD's to increase performance considerably.

it was a beta program last I checked but man does it make a HDD run much better and sends SSD's through the roof, but it takes some time to get the settings right for the situation.

Im thinking that the idea of 2 separate SSD's makes the most sense honestly, its usually what you would do with Photoshop

I like the idea of having two drives as well. I get to use two SATA channels and the read/write of one drive doesn't bottleneck the read/write of the other.

So with two drives, it's better to keep them independent rather than RAID 0?

Since your files are not overly large I think two independent ssd's would be a great setup. Say like two Samsung 256 GB 840 Pro's.

That way you won't have to deal with a spinner drive at all. Setup files can go on either drive, no matter.

Thanks for the info! I think I'll go with the two drives and check out FancyCache.

Fancy Cache is deffinitely worth playing with. it may end up not being worth while but if you get the settings right its a monster. especially if you have a bunch of unused ram
