That's not really correct. He can use any monitors that match the output of his video card, VGA, DVI or HDMI (or any combination of VGA and DVI for two monitors).
Some video cards (depends on the manufacturer) won't do HDMI with VGA or DVI at the same time (ie HDMI, then no VGA or DVI).
If his GTX 640 supports VGA and or DVI he, for sure, can run two monitors (each in 1920 x 1200). The problem, as I said above is that some cards won't support the other outputs if an HDMI monitor is connected to the HDMI output from the card to get you to three monitors. If that indeed does work, then he'd need two monitors that were VGA/DVI (depending on which type(s) his card supports) and one that was HDMI.Edited by billbartuska - 3/21/13 at 1:12pm
