Are you by chance listening to mp3s? If you listen to an audio CD in the drive, does it sound better? If you're listening to low quality sound, it will almost always sound better using lower quality headphones. I wouldn't listen to anything less than 192kbps with beyerdynamics.
I've used the 880s and was _very_ pleased with their quality: never heard anything even close what you're describing. My music is all flac or v0 quality mp3 though.
