7970 ref in xfire or GTX690? - Page 4

I played with 7970 CF for eight months, those exact MSI OC models in fact. They were poor overclockers, could only pull 1050MHz core on stock voltage. And the noise was so much of a problem there was no way I was going to put them on overvoltage.

Would have traded those 7970's for a 690 in a heartbeat. There are issues with CF, plain and simple. They're not everywhere, they're not overwhelming, but they are there in larger volume than with SLI. Finally sold my 7970 set, had 670 SLI on order but in the end got a Titan relatively cheap and went for it, because even SLI is more trouble than a single GPU. But the 690 is a solid, well-engineered GPU that is really well balanced for 1080p. I'd even say the perfect GPU for 1080p @120/144Hz.

If you plan on keeping the card(s) for a while, you will begin to feel limited by the ram on the 690. If you mod skyrim it will already show this weakness and considering consoles are getting beefed up now, future games are likely to be more ram intensive, which will show the lead of the 7970s over the 690 to grow. It's just sad to have such a high-end piece of equipment and have it be irrelevant so quickly because of (what I believe is) a dumb decision by Nvidia to only give it 2gb and a small bus.

690 because:
A) it's more than plenty for your res; and
B) you are getting a great deal

I personally scoff at the idea of buying today for the "games of the future". This is too nuanced a reason for me to consider any current purchases, as there will be "future cards" for "future games" in the future. Lol

For the price you mention, get the GTX 690. Less power hungry, less heat and around 5-8 fps less than CFX 7970 setup. Its not like you will notice it with a 120hx monitor. thumb.gif
