10k/rpm maxtor atlas 73.4 vs wd raptor 36.7

Thread Starter
hello everyone,
i want to buy a new hdd, but i am still a little unsure whether it should be a 10k or a normal 7,2k one
i was looking at these two models right now:

Maxtor Atlas 10K V 73.4GB U320-SCA (8D073J0)
and
Western Digital Raptor 36.7GB 8MB SATA (WD360GD)

the maxtor costs 110,88€ and the raptor is 102€.
these prizes are not proportional to the size of the drives. does one of the drives get louder or hotter than the other one? the maxtor has a read time of 4.0ms and the raptor reads with 5.2ms.

I would get two 80gb drivers and raid them, it would be faster and more memory space. And for a similair price

Go with 2 normal 7200 drives in a RAID array. It offers more room than a Raptor while saving money at the same time.

Chances are it'll be a little faster as well.

You do know that the Maxtor Atlas requires a SCSI controller? The only 10K RPM SATA drive are the Raptors.

With the Atlas Drive, you will have to buy a SCSI card, so it really will not be worth it.

SCSI cards cost about $50 to a lot lot lot more. It will take up a PCI/PCIe slot and SCSI is mainly for server environments. If you want a fast OS drive, 36GB Raptor is nice and fine. Make sure to get one with a 16MB cache.

Stick with SCSI for servers, you'd need an 80-pin one too, which is more.

Your system would be faster with two of these in a RAID 0.

SCSI cards are very expensive. Especially the Ultra320 ones that the Atlas will need. The Raptor would be a much better choice.
