Don't be scared to overclock the 965! I have one at 4.25. For best results overclock using base clock and multiplier.By doing that you raise your NB speed as well which improves your memory bandwidth. An example of my OC is as follows:
Base Clock: 250Mhz
Multi: 17x
Voltage: 1.55v
NB Multi: 11x
NB Speed: 2750MHz
RAM setting at 1333mhz for an OC of 1666MHz
HTT Multi: 8x
HTT Speed: 2000Mhz
That's what my OC screen on my BIOS shows and your BIOS should be very similar to mine as I have the 990FXA-GD65

Just make sure your HTT stays as close to 2000MHz as possible. You could reach 4.0 on 1.4v-1.45v depending on the quality of your CPU cooler.Don't go for a high voltage overclock cause of your VRM's. I would keep the OC as High as is stable without much additional voltage! Good Luck!thumb.gif

Yep,g46,not g45. Yet, Disputed means what? Fine for OC? MSI is known for VRM problems. If you want help with your overclock, I will help you. BUT,since you don't know much about overclocking (not in a bad manner, when I was new (and young) in overclocking I burned quite a few motherboards myself) don't risk your investment. You need proper cooling for your CPU. The factory cooler is not good for that kind of thing. Read these to help you short things out.

Lower it to 1.4-145v. Stock reccommended voltage for 965 is 1.35V I think. My motherboard also auto regulated the volts on my CPU a bit high!

does this look better? I OC to 3.83 ghz. he said not to go over 2000 on ht link but it IS slightly over is that really bad? please give me some specific instructions on these numbers and what to change. Is 3.83 too ambitious?

i had this chip for a long time and for 3.5ghz you should be able to use 1.40v just fine. lower it to 1.4 as the previous poster stated. i ran my 965 all the way up to 4.1 with a hyper 212 evo and never got above 57c under stress test load

230 * 17 = 3900 @ 1.475v and raise the v if thats not enough as necessary... just WATCH YOUR TEMPERATURES CLOSELY<<<<<<<< .... that oc i just posted should be easily doable provided you have adequate cooling

1.4 is a normal, not 1.5 .

First things is my chip can go up to 3.9 without changing the voltages but after that it wants to take a crazy amount. Some chips are good, some chip are alright, its just how your chip works.
Also, make sure your memory is manually set to the manufacturer recommended CAS latency and timings, and voltage if you haven't already done that. And just play around with it. the 965 is a lot of fun to play around with as long as you're watching your temps. from my experience with this chip, the lower you can keep your multiplier, the lower the voltage you will have to use to achieve the same OC = the less heat you will produce

When it comes to HTT speed aim for 150Mhz above or below the 2000Mhz mark. So you can go up to 150MHz over the 2000MHz recommended before you see a drop in performance. So how you have it now is good! I would say get yourself a Hyper 212 EVO and aim for 4Ghz! That's when the fun starts!biggrin.gif But good work man!thumb.gif
