Neither one of those commands cover all of the aforementioned points. And this is exactly why I hate people comparing distro's, you always get "but x,y, z" from zealots without them actually addressing any of the irritations that were originally raised.

So yeah, you can easily work around all of the short comings I described, but that's not the point. My point is whose short comings exist and they annoy me, so instead I opt for distros that don't annoy me. I'm exercising this thing called "personal preference".
A bigger problem with Debian is their release engineering goes into an "infinite loop" then take forever to make a release.
'Short comings'? How on earth is that a short coming? You say it can't do x, I say to do x do this. Human readable is really a matter of perferance (And I always perfered yum to either in that respect) I'm not an apt zealot, I distro hop all the time and if I could use pacman on debian I might. Pacman does hve it's advantages- the main one I liked was the ability to remove all but the base packages (although thats also just the nature of arch) but in terms of the things you mentioned, output and listing installed packages, it is either equal or a matter of personally perferance.

Of course it's personal preference. I categorically stated that in every ******* post that you've argued against.
no need to go ballistic. I just don't think the statement of human readable output or listing installed package was justified, you can use what ever you want for yourself ('I find pacmans out put more human readable' is fine) but

Note in the other posts he consistently says "personal preference"

Also, pulling out of context; you did the same thing.

I'm losing my rag because you seem too stubborn to grasp that this whole tangent is an opinion piece. I don't need to say "i find pacman's output to be more human readable", because it's already established that I'm talking about my personal opinion (and I'd even said "this is my personal preference" in the very post that you're arguing about how my post reads as if I'm not talking about personal opinions!!!).

You keep dragging this bloody argument out for no reason other than the fact that your personal preference differs. And you know what? I couldn't give a toss what your personal preference is. Nor could I give a toss if you agree with me or not. The only reason I made that bloody point to begin with was because someone else asked why I wouldn't want to run Debian on a desktop (which, again, is asking about my personal preference).

But since you must insist on having this dumb argument, then let's compare the two side by side to really see why I dislike apt-get:

CLI arguments:
Code:
# Debian
apt-get update && apt-get upgrade
# Arch
pacman -Suy
1-0 to pacman in my opinion

searching:
Code:
# Debian
apt-cache search package-name
# Arch
pacman -Ss package-name
2-0 to pacman (pacman wins because it's the same command and fewer keystrokes)

output from search: apt-cache search apache (Click to show)

That's a complete mess!!!! There's no order to it, irrelevant results and so many results that the important ones get lost. So I often end up having to add additional greps and piping the output into more (or just using the web if I'm really not sure what I'm looking for).

Now compare that to Arch: pacman -Ss (Click to show)

More relevant results, better laid out and even shows you what's already installed. How can you not say that's more human readable?
In all the years that I've been running Arch, I can count on one hand the times when I've had to google for a package.

3-0 pacman (an easy win that one too)

# ...cropped because you get the general gist
Much friendlier output. Clear progress bars, percentages, bytes transferred and overall progress (ie number of pages remaining). So when I compare the two side by side doing real world uses that I run into regularly, pacman beats apt in every test.

I mean, obviously it's all just personal preference at the end of the day (I don't know how many times I need to say this to you!!!), but I honest do think pacman's output is much more readable than apt-get / cache's is. And in fact, I just generally don't enjoy using the Debian package managers. Now obviously your opinions will differ. But I really don't care. And I don't care because I'm not you. You can use whatever package manager you bloody well like. I really don't care.

lol

I could never figure out how to properly search stuff with aptitude, I've always grepped the results to get some sensible output. Other than that, it never struck me as particularly annoying (though when I first moved from Fedora to Debian, I went ballistic over not being able to use glob patterns). I suppose that's because I usually like myself a stable system, I don't install/remove a lot of stuff once I have everything up and working.

Or perhaps I'm just used to it...

That's the thing though, I'm not saying apt is broken. I'm more than happy to run Debian on servers (in fact I do run Debian on a few of my servers). But I do install and tinker with stuff enough on my laptop that apt does become an annoyance. So it's not even as if I wasn't meeting jrl halfway to begin with.
