Is my PSU limiting my overclocking ability? 670 Power Target and Overclocking.

Thread Starter
I have a 670 FTW in an SG06, with the stock 450W PSU that maxes out at 36A the single +12V rail.

Although my 670 FTW is supposed to be able to support a power target of 145%, as it uses the 680 PCB, I've never gotten the power usage to anything more than ~108-110.

Recently my friend got the same card and an SG08, with the stock 600W PSU with 46A on the single +12V rail. With his power target set to 145%, he maxes out at about ~136%.

This increase in power usage has enabled him to achieve a much higher overclock than me, and I believe it is likely due to the PSU.

I used to think that I had a card that just didn't overpower and overclock well, but now I'm beginning to think it could be my PSU. What do you guys think?

Although I'm not sure, I think a stock 450w might indeed limit your OC'ing.

It may be your PSU, some cards just don't max their power target though so I may just be that. My card rarely even hits 100% even though I have it at 115% in EVGA Precision.
The GTX 670 needs 15A.

Maybe get a Corsair CX 600 and see if it performs better? Shouldn't be expensive and you'll at least have a better PSU smile.gif

It's not the PSU.

It would be better for him to pick up a better PSU if he does decide to go that route, the CX600 is average at best.

i believe you need a little bit more juice to OC. have a look at the rosweill and seasonic psus they are magnificent.
Seasonic M12II 620 is very nice and semi modular.. you can get the non modular for cheaper..

have a good day

^^ you never know smile.gif
As said, get a cheap but reliable PSU and check if you can OC more. worst case scenario: you'll have a better PSU.
Have a look at the CX, TX or GS series from corsair smile.gif

doh.gif The CX, TX and GS series are the worst quality PSUs that Corsair sell.
He should go with a high quality unit, Rosewill Capstone, Seasonic G Series etc.

Get a PSU like mine - the Seasonic G-650.It's an amazing unit! Rosewill Capstone 650-M is also a viable option.
