I like that board--but if I did does DFI make a wider slotted SLI board? I like the DFI BIOS a lot--but the board is pretty cramped. If I do replace it I want something that will accomodate the coolers better.

It could be bad sectors on the hard drive seeing as how the notebook isn't overclocked. Have you tried chkdsk /r?

I'll post back after my attempt.
Shoot it better not be--brand spanky new Raptors in RAID 10 that should rebuild itself...I dunno.

I am thinking about pulling the Raptors to build a 4 HDD RAID 0 on ICE and just run a single drive. Can you run RAID0 with just 3 Drives?

Well it wasn't the hard drive or memory. It appreared to have been overheating.
Slapped some new thermal paste on and cleaned the hsf. She's purring now.

You can indeed run RAID0 with three drives. It will actually be theoretically faster than having 2, but depending on what files you are working with it may not prove to be such.

Keep us posted on how it goes!

Thanks--I am hoping it is hardware related actually. I have a 4800+ coming from StormLobster--maybe by this weekend I will have a chance to findout. Holding off on doing anything at all until I get CPU.

At that time Iwill try swapping the 7800GTs around to see if that helps with the madras distortion upon startup. I was thinking that it might be a SLI issue...since I am geting the bluescreen about the same time Iwould get the wierd distortion whenthe SLI kicks in.

If so then I will probably just pull one of the GFX cards and see if it will boot otherwise..

Hoping it is just the CPU.

Started @ 7pm Saturday and stopped at 3:30am Sinday. A very long night...

I started by removing the 7800Gts as I know the top one has an issue with one of the DVI outputs ("Why is my monitor pink!!!???) and even using the "good" output I still get a wierd "madras pirint" pattern when first loading into XP and intiating the SLI driver set.

The DFI mobo makes the use of wide cards problematic. They fit the Asus type SLI boards much better--even with the spacer I concocted it was kinda ridiculous--plus I had to offset the NB heatpipe at a crazy angle to fit the card/molex. The reason behind all that is this board came out when 6600GTs where state of the art--so no provision for the way GFX card belw up in size shortly after.

I then removed the 3800+ and installed the 4800+ refitted the Storm WaterBlock and attached a 40mm clear fan from the dead AA8XE to the Storm eith a piece of foam tape so that it would draft air up and trough the NB heatpipe fins. I reinstalled the 7800GTs but swapped positions so I could test the lower card outputs. During this time I had the CMOS battery removed and the pins jumpered just to revert to 100% default settings.

Booted right into BIOS without a hitch (but the 3800+ was doing that at the end as well) and adjusted the necessary settings to be sure I would but from the RAID10 array on the Silicon Image RAID5 controller.

I got the exact same result--a momentary XP load screen followed by a flash of blue then reboot. I went through the usual series of checks and everything in BIOS was configured correctly--I enabled/disabled the different SATA options but nothing made a difference.

I then removed one of the 7800GTs and jumpered the board to single card and disabled SLI aperture and rebooted and the same thing. I then realised that it was not likely a Hardware error but a dirver error and perhaps a simple repair of XP would cure it.

Then began the long and frustrating attempt to get XP to see the HDDs. Using the exact same drivers I used to originally install XP (F6) they would appear to load during the initial installation but at the end I always got the same result--XP saw no HDDs and would not install.

Of course I went rhough BIOS and the RAID config utility and tried everything I could. I even tried rebooting a few times to se if it might now work--nothing.

Well still determined not to let this get me down I took a little break to eat some cold pizza and drink some cold coffee and have a smoke. Then I came back and dressed out the the cables from the PSU with some black spiral warp--and hid the un-used PCI power lead and so on--generally making some aesthetic improvents which were pretty satisfying. I had gotten the spiral wrap from WallyWorld and had some nice Scotch electircal tape in DFI yellow--so wrapped the cabling like a harness--teeing off to then bayside fan and light controllers and to the HDDs. With the HBA in the PCI slot there would be no room for a second card--and I was getting tired so I decided to go with what I had before me--2 Raptors that needed to be brought to life...and some SCheetahs in case that was not going to work.

Now it was not going to be that big a deal I had thought at about 12 midnight to just set up an array from scratch and start over. Well the facts turned out to be just the opposite. Despite remaking the F6 floppy a few times and even trying using just one drive XP just was not seeing either RAID controller. At that point I decided I would break out the SCSI HBA and Cheetahs and try to load XP on them--I had doen this before in RAID1 but the results were pretty dismal--slow as molasses. I am quite familiar with setting up SCSI LVDSE HBAs and was once again stumped when I found that the lovely u320 ribbon cable had thre parted strands at one of the terminal junctions...that might explain the dismal RAID1 performance. The only other u320 cable I had on the house was the one in my Wife's rig--and it was for the main drive. NOT a good thing to mess with at 1 AM--or ever really...been there done that...lived in the hall of shame for years...

Anyway I did have a u160 in my stash--but it had a built in terminator that I knew was problematic. I hooked it up and was stumped to find it only would see the drive a the terminal beside the terminator...spent quite a while testing different jumpers on the backplane adapters and plugging and replugging the drives in different terminals...basically my hopes of RAID where shot. But since I had the HBA installed anyway I tried loading XP onto the SCSI--but the very same file I had used to load it before created a line error. I remade the disk but the same error. I DLed the file from LSI and made a disk...same error. It was about 2:30am and I was running out of mojo. I was too tired to removes the HBA or Cheetahs so I just plugged in a Raptor and loaded XP and saw that all was well with the DFI!

Booted into XP like ZOINK so I was not really missing the second Raptor that much. Iwas so whupped from so many misadventures I stumbled into bed and just left everything for the morning.

PART TWO

Hot coffee in my belly I dug back into Velocitor and pulled the CHeetahs and HBA. I decided to go with a single Raptor just to avoid any further aggravations. And I decided to use the slightly damaged 7800GT to test the 3800+ in the known good A8NSLI I had scummed out with neopreen and vaseline. Having heard Burn say the elctric parts cleaner took of liquid electrical tape I was thinking about trying to salvage that mobo--it was a good clocker.

So I carefully stashed the Cheetahs and cards and cables and Floppy drive and tidied away the explosion of PC gear from the night before. Feeling much more organized and willing to wrestle with SW I went ahead and started loading all the drivers and updates and so forth. One thing I had not tried that I think might be a good thing for any of us X2 owners is the AMD dual core optimizer from Tweaksrus.com

I watched the BIOS temps for quite a while the night before and found Core Temp was reporting very close to the same values: 30C idle... With Orthos running I see one core at 40-45 and one core at 42-49. This is at stock settings so I am either going to have to take it easy on this X2 or find some way of cooling it more efficiently. Considering the loop is comprised of a Storm, MPC655, PA160 with a 200mm blowing through it I am thinking maybe the IHS needs to be lapped..

Anyhoo I looked over my cabling efforts and made a few minor reroutes that clear the airflow from the bottom fan--now that there is but a single HDD the flow through the case is very good. The spiral wrap looks pretty decent actually--and it is smoother than sheathing. I think I will make a false floor to hide the cabling from the PSU though--there's about a 1/2" from the floor to the bottom of the lowest HDD that would be a great place to "disappear" some cables.

Currently updating and updating and updating Windows.

Camera chager is gone missing now for about a week. I am getting ready to head over to BB to pick up another Case might get a charger while I am at it.

Not that less is more, but I now have a Raptor and a 7800GT and a 3800 that I pulled and all I need is a case...

Glad to hear you got it back up- That's scary, having frayed ribbons can't be fun :\\

Keeping my hopes up for P965 "actual" RAID. I really hope the 4 WD's take well to their new enviroment.

What's your next course of action? Any upgrades, mods, etc.?

I would like to get the RAID array back up but damned if I know what is wrong with that.

One time when this happened before I bought a new floppy drive and it worked! So that is on my list. That and maybe one more Raptor to try out RAID0 with 3 HDDs...I do have 3 spaces in the bay LOL.

Not sure about staying with the 7800GT. It's a nice card and all, but I am thinking of snagging the 7900GTX out of my Wife's rig when she isn't looking and putting in a 7800GT. A very cheap ugrade. LOL.

I like the SLI benchmark scores but the DFI board just barely fits the two cards... If I upgrade to the newest of the new cards only one is going to fit I am thinking.

What would you do in my situation? I like the mobo a lot. I like the BIOS and it runs the chips well. I have a fetish for HDDs...SLI would be great--but what is going to fit besides what I already have?
