Velocitor--WaterCooled/Raptor/SLI/X2 Rig - Page 23

Okay I just could not deal with Velocitor being slower than ICE. It's like a pimp daddy with one good looking yotch on his right arm and dumpy one on the left...jest aint right....

So I ran down the road to BB and snagged the only Raptor they had and the only 7950GTs they had and headed back to get V up to snuff.

First thing I did was tear out all the spaghetti of FanMate2 BS on the drive bay side and peel off all that wonderful foam tape I use for everything and pull the PSU cabling and totally redo it and slip 3 more Raptors in the lower bay. I mean there is something WRONG with empty HDD bays...but not anymore...not a slot unfilled on her now...

I spent some time redoing the cabling to max out the airflow and make a pretty sight throught he case window and then slipped in the BFG 7950GTOCs.

The first thing that I noticed was how much smaller they are than the 7800GTs or the ATI X1950pros. The eVGA 7900GTX in my wifes Conroid is gigantic--double slot and long and heavy. these 7950GTs are very light--no half pound of copper on these bad boys. Which is a great thing becasue the DFI board is very tight Theoretically I could be a total idiot and put a PCI card in the slot beside the lower GFX--if I wanted to smother it to death. But they also are not really attractive...I guess i was expecting these shiney huge cards considering their shiney huge price. The ATI cards were indeed stunning to look at. These are basically hidden behind the wonderous UV glow of the AC Ryan fan on the side panel so no real loss there...LOL.

Just for the heck of it I am using the first 4 SATA headers which are NVRAID rather than Silicon Image...I have about 5 or 6 hours into the updating and config of the SW on this rig already but I am thinking that RAID0 with 3 drives should be interesting...I didn't think you could use od numbers for RAID0--guess i will find out...

As it is I have the drives recognized in XP and am curious ho much faster an empty drive benches. I wish RAID and XP were better integrated so that I could configure RAID arrays in XP without so much hassle and just test them.
The Silicon Imager RAID5 utility appears to have that functionality--so I might plug a pair of them in there just to see how it works.

So the little mishap that I thought wiped out my beloved DFI board was but a fart in the airline. Now Velocitor is on par with ICE as far as GFX capability--maybe even faster. Although I know there is know hope at ever touching the SuperPi of the Intel gang at least I know my rig will frag with the best of them. And just for good measure has three Raptors under the hood...jess my frenz Velocitor is nosink to mess weeth now.

I just got a mess of games from Transonic and am going to be immersing myself in them uintil I can kick some butt and then...well..then I will still have crappy lag from my 128 KB internet connection lol...if only I could overclock my internet...

Look for pictures of the upgrade tomorrow!

Peace

Well I just flashed the BIOS and now the board will not POST...I popped the battery and retried it...nothing.

What can I do guys? I love this board.

Any DFI owners know any tricks to recovering from a bad flash?

Oh well--thanks to Xavier1421 and Duke for their help via PM. I guess the DFI is done...so I will follow with a memorial in photgraphs for the lovely board.

Done!
A new BIOS chip for about $20 will cure that issue.

Here is how she looked after I pulled the 7800GTs.

Still Virgins ...ooooooooooo

And a brand spanky Raptor and one with a few hours on it to fill up those empty slots...

Man I love seeing that...

Blue...

I redid the wiring again some more...less spaghetti.

The new cards are very low key...the exact opposite of the DFI board LOL

Here's a peek at the watercooling loop.

Back together. Awaiting themoment of truth...

Part of the red/blue theme....

Slot Load is nice and dry this time...no congealing PrimoChill gumming up the works. I learned to leave an air gap so that it has some where to expand besides past the filler cap O-Ring.

Head to head competitors back in action...ICE and Velocitor going at it.

The Blood.....

The Glow....

So Long pretty UV motherboard....

Gonna miss ya.

Oh, and CD - my board - the DFI LP nF4 SLI-DR Expert has the PCI-e slots further apart

I know it is hard to see, but its clearly a longer SLI bridge than yours, although Ive never seen the 2 boards side by side before.

Ill see if I can get some better hi-res pics tonight or tomorrow morning (sorry these are from my RAZR, it has a pathetic camera)

It looks like you could actually use the PCI slots too. So I guess expert means "we figured out the right way this time"

All your PCI slot are belong to us.

Yea, my PCI slots are somewhat useful - although I am not using them yet.

Expert also means 'Set aside a week to try and get the machine to POST with one TCCD module and one Graphics card, then go back and try 2... then fail and try again. Repeat the previous steps a dozen more times'
