They are just changing from pirating Windows to pirating Linux.

How long till MS releases "windows 8: China edition"?

I'm sure windows 8 has a Chinese edition already tongue.gif.

Yeah I doubt anything significant would come from this. You aren't going to kill windows with a lightly customized linux distro... best case scenario they take windows from 91% down to 90% share.

I agree. The public sector might make the transition to Linux, like other countries have done, but the general public needs an application ecosystem in order to make the switch, and that is why Linux has a diminute marketshare everywhere. It's getting better, but it will still take a while. Steam coming to Linux is a good start in order to boost marketshare.

I think they already have. Windows 8 has the same ability as Windows 7 Ultimate, that is, you can change the language of the OS, but Microsoft sells a specific version of Windows 8 in China that doesn't have this ability.

Although I think you mean that Microsoft can eventually make specific changes at their government's request, right ?

I was thinking more like it would be a totally free chinese only version with a few features removed or something....

no actually the ccp actually likes to claim to be communist, despite the fact most consider that they are basically a pragmatic authoritarian government.

i see this as part of China's attempt to basically create a separate and distinct digital world, part of their goal of creating a second internet. since this is the chinese version i'm assuming it's going to basically be a version of linux with loads of malware spyware biggrin.gif

yep only mindless propaganda or creative reinterpretations of historical facts though biggrin.gif. i spent some time in china and some the names people come up for such posters are pretty funny. the most popular seemed to be "5 cent posters" (referring to what they were paid) or "running dogs." I'm not sure what the "running" part refers to in that instance

having used linux, the problems are

OS useability and quality is crappy for the most part

Application quality, useability etc same situation.

what it would take to make linux viable, is a concerted design team with a singular focus to fix the applications and ui incosistencys etc.

good luck !
