[Ars] Goodbye Windows: China to create home-grown OS based on Ubuntu - Page 10

Good for China.

I've been saying for years now that if a country was serious about breaking Microsofts hold on the world and whining about the price they charge *cough* Australia and the EU *cough* that their government should start a program to hire their own people to write an OS to compete, and that it could be done in 1-2 years.

meh...

I kinda doubt it is going to move the Chinese away from pirate copies of windows... Windows 8 might smile.gif
probably because the "official corporate operating system" which doubtless has U.S. government back doors and god knows what else to tattle on you if you try going around, well, doing anything corporations dont like, including sharing software, downloading films, movies, criticising imperialism, etc.

Yeah I doubt anything significant would come from this. You aren't going to kill windows with a lightly customized linux distro... best case scenario they take windows from 91% down to 90% share.
Linux actually had something like 70% of the market share in China, before m$ came and bribed their way in.

The government probably has remote access to all the system using this OS!

Think twice before sticking badges, don't mix politics and economy.

i think you forgot that probably most copies of windows in china are pirated anyway. it's not about cost-it's about creating a platform that the CCP can control absolutely
i disagree with that. if China uses windows, then it increases their vulnerability of being hacked by the nsa. i think moving to linux is the right move and long overdue. i often wondered why the Chinese or any independent country used windows, given that the nsa, fbi, etc all have backdoors to windows. it just doesnt make any sense for anyone to use windows other than the usa. the risk is too large. currently, Chinese subway systems run windows, and you know how easy it is for the nsa to disrupt the Chinese subway systems?

Any product thats is made and designed in china will fail. Just like how you buy apple products, it will say that it was made in china BUT designed in California. Not saying that i'm a apple fan or anything but its the truth to anything that china makes.teaching.gif

um i mean the us and uk are creators of the modern free enterprise system, if you look at it from a historical perspective. granted pretty much every state that has free enterprise has corporatist elements. they do this for practical reasons, sometime state and corporate cooperation is the best solution to a problem, and it doesn't inherently make such countries democratic.

i do agree that people who call chinese "communist" at this point are very mistaken though. at this point, the ccp pretty much just pays lip service to communism, which i guess they assume gives them more legitimacy then openly stating their basic position of pragmatic authoritarianism
you mean pragmatic capitalism. ive never seen anyone get pulled over by the cops in China, however, i always see them getting pulled over in britain, and usa. also, the prison population of the usa is 6 times more than China per capita. so i think you are confused about what authoritarianism is. the Chinese have never been the type to use cops to settle problems. they do it through education and discussion. and the most fascist Chinese are actually the taiwanese, and hongers, but you dont hear about this because the taiwanese and hongers are puppets of the west.

well if youre going to get malware and viruses on windows also, then you might as well use linux and save yourself $100 in the proces. and as i said, even if price was not an issue, if Chinese use linux, it is more secure, and they dont have to worry about getting hacked by the nsa. recently, the u.s regime blamed China for hacking their computers. no doubt this was caused by some trojans where people in the u.s could hack u.s computers through Chinese zombie computers. if the Chinese closed that loop hole, it would also make it harder for the u.s regime to conduct false flag attacks on itself through Chinese computers.
