Water chillers and first dive into watercooling

Hey guys,

I'm going to take my first dive into watercooling and wanted to run somethings past you. It seems a few years ago that people got into it, but I dont see it alot on here. I'm talking about Water Chillers. I have been looking at the Hailea HC-500a or maybe something similar. I don't really have a reason for wanting it other than I wanna do something really really different than normal watercooling.

I know people are going to say it cost more, and I realize that, but I'm running 2 680s in SLI right now and so the cost of the 2 rads and fans that I'd want would put me within about 100 bucks of a full loop or so I see it.

Anyone got any questions or concerns or comments? I'm really wanting to start saving for this so I can get my build ready for IB-E/HW-E and the GTX 700s and loops.

Here is a guy thats doing it similar to what I have planned.

other than the expense which you are going to over look, the only other real drawbacks of running a water chiller is they sound like a fridge running, and condensation if you run one that'll chill the water in your loop to temps lower than ambient

if you can find ways around those problems or if you're willing to ignore the noise, by running the chiller in another room and pumping it into the room with your rig, you'd only have to worry about condensation

That was the other thing is that I do live in the south, so it does get warm here, but i try to keep my house around 75f I know the hole purpose of this is to chill the water way down and keep temps super low, but if I had to run the temps a bit higher.... low to mid 40s then I'd still be OK with that.

I also thought about doing a silverston ft02 style case that would allow any condensation to fall away from components. and still have the fans blow across everything. I dunno, I'm still working all this out in my head.

you'd still have insulate your components to run temps that low

the standard fridge temps is 40 F, so you see that condensation on your nice cool beer, that'll be your video card and cpu and all of the tubing running to those components

you'll have to coat your video card and motherboard like you would with a TEC plate, for tips on doing that there are more than a few people on TEC board

if you stayed close to the ambient temp, you won't run into condensation, i'm pretty sure others on this board will agree with me, you don't need those kind of temps to overclock, plus i'm not so sure a chiller will maintain those temps with an active heat load

I would be running it closer to ambient, but would push the temps down a bit when working the machine (long video rendering and gaming sesions) .

I know I'm going to a full loop, I just thought about stepping out of the box and trying something crazy. I have no problem coating the cards and chipset, Im just looking to essentially keep the rig at close to ambient temps at all times... 25-35C or 60-80F

So long as you keep the water above the dew point AT ALL TIMES, you won't have condensation. The Hailea chillers are pretty smart, and when you set a temp they will constantly adjust under load to keep the water at, or as near that temp as possible.

They are LOUD, though, and they cycle constantly, so you should really consider having them chiller in a separate room. This just means you'll need very powerful pumps, but cooler plus pumps is not so bad....

I'm going to be buying the 500A after I move and figure out where I'm going to put it (I also don't want to add 60 pounds to moving). It'll probably be in a separate room along with the pumps and res (going to use two 655's on max speed to ensure good pressure with 15+ feet of tubing going each way, + the tubing in the case).

You can't do what the guy did in this video and direct connect the chiller into your loop. The 500A is way more powerful than a desktop computer, so it'll be constantly cycling on and off, which will destroy the compressor. (You'll notice in the real world that refrigerators and AC units have built in timers to prevent constant cycling). So you need either a thermal reservoir (gallons of liquid, not liters). I'm just going to be submerging my rad in 20 gallons of water and the chiller will be dealing with that (on a separate submersible pump loop).

To deal with condensation if you go below the dew point (calculator: http://www.dpcalc.org/) there's no good solutions, just ok ones. Knowing I was going the chiller route, I developed a controller that will compute the dew point in a room and toggle a relay to keep the temperature of a liquid above it. That's what I'm going to use rather than dealing with condesation.

Certainly possible, certainly would provide a high level of performance, but first your need to plan out and build a loop that is efficient enough to actually see gains in having moderately chilled water-- If you have to run your water very cold to see improvements, you're at high risk of condensation forming and zapping your electronics. I say you should build a great, un-chilled water loop first, to get comfortable with it all, and then start thinking about the chiller. Water cooling is something that works great when done right, but a too-ambitious goal from the outset, never having done it before, might lead to disappointment, or worse, broken parts.

Get your "car" built before you plan to turn it into a "hot rod", is what I'm saying. wink.gif

Thanks for the suggestions guys... I'm probably going to be moving soon and so my idea was to build it into the closet and through the wall..I can basically make a little cabinet in the closet with the extra pump and chiller.

I just wanted to do something that not alot of people do. I mean I guess most of what we do here most people don't do, but I wanted to be outside the box, hence me having 2 h60s and a X60 in my rig instead of full loop.

i don't think putting a chiller in a closet is that good of an idea, it's going to make that closet hot
