First time build + Watercooling

Thread Starter
I know most people will say not to watercool on the first build, but I am pretty set on it. I plan to overclock my gpu and cpu, which along with the reservoir, rad, and pump, will be the only components in the loop.

First Build PC Component advice: http://www.overclock.net/t/1374808/1500-budget-first-build

Planned components for WCing: WILL BE INSIDE SWITCH 810 LE/SE

1x XSPC Raystorm CPU Block
1x EK 7970 block
1x EK 7970 backplate
1x XSPC D5 pump
1x XSPC D5 top
3x Koolance 2200rpm fans
1x Alphacool NexXxoS XT45 360mm Radiator
1x Phobya Balancer 150mm Reservoir
1x 10ft Primochill Advanced LRT
8x XSPC Compression fittings 1/2 ID 3/4 OD
1x XSPC 10mm Male to Male G1/4 fitting
1x NZXT Sentry Mesh

Feedback is encouraged, even if your calling me a dumbass for picking some of the components I did tongue.gif. It would be fantastic if you could pick something out for me that would save me some cash. And again the main question is whether or not I should set up my watercooling as I put all my components together for the first time, THANK YOU!

Honestly man, I can't find anything wrong to say about the setup your going to have. Are you looking for a certain color scheme? If you are, EK plexi waterblocks work perfect for coolant mixes with clear tubing. Besides that....seems you've got a good mindset on what brands are worth looking at, though I'm not a fan of XSPC products, and I've NEVER heard of Masterkleer tubing, lol.

Only thing I can really recommend is to buy an Pump top, or pump cover (aesthetics) so you can connect the reservoir straight to the pump. http://www.frozencpu.com/products/16419/ex-pmp-198/EK_D5_X-Top_Acetal_Pump_Top_CSQ_-_Laing_D5_and_Swiftech_MCP-650655_EK-D5_X-TOP_CSQ_-_Acetal.html works well.

Make sure to show us how everything looks once it's all installed! thumb.gif

Cool colors; ie purple and blue. Do you think I would be better off getting clear tubing with purple dye? And the only XSPC products I have on the list are the waterblock, which is highly recommended and just $50, and the compression fittings, which are the cheapest ones I could find. Also, instead of a top for the MCP655, which would be quite expensive, what about an MCP35B, which comes with a top?

Also an answer to my main question would be appreciated - the one about whether or not to install watercooling for the burn in test?

Will definitely post lots when I get started, and thank you! +1 rep

I would recommend clear tubing with coolant. Just make sure you stick to well known coolant brands such as Mayhems. A quick note: Although tube staining doesn't happen right away, you may eventually notice it. Though what's their to notice with colored coolant inside it. rolleyes.gif

Also, don't add any silver kill coil/whatever to this coolant mix. It'll make the coolant/dye chunk up and clog your tubing.

When I first installed all my blocks, I did about an 10-15min burn in test...lol. With compression fittings bro, you won't have much to worry about. Just have a couple sheets of paper towels around the waterblocks. If you see even one drop, shut the pc off (or just PSU if doing jumpstart) and reseat whatever needs to be reseated. Oh, don't forget to flush everything with distilled water btw before installing the blocks! thumb.gif

I don't know much about the MCP35B, so sorry that I can't help ya there.

edit: totally misread about the burn in part. I would recommend you leave it on for a couple hours/day. Wouldn't want a component to break on ya with waterblocks on it as well. mad.gif

So before I even know if my components work, I should set them up with watercooling?

No, no...lol. I would install all the parts first, maybe do a stress test (overclocking apps), then install watercooling parts. If you don't want to do a stress test, I'm sure playing a graphic/cpu intensive game for a couple hours would be suffice.

The problem with this is I wont have anything to cool the CPU, which I'm assuming would fry it lol

As long as you are not buying an Intel 2011 socket cpu it will come with a cheap heatsink (Socket 1155 does atleast).

Right now I plan on getting the i7 3770k. Are you saying that it would be safe to test all my components for 24 hours before watercooling with just a heatsink?
