New PC Build

Thread Starter
I would like to get some advice on the build that I had made into what I should be looking at temperature/performance wise. Here is the core of the build:
Code:
Motherboard: ASUS SABERTOOTH Z77
PSU: Corsair HX Series HX850 850W
CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz
CPU Cooler: Corsair Hydro Series H80i
RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1866 MHZ (PC3 15000)
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 660 Ti 2GB
HDD / SSD: [2] WD VelociRaptor 300 GB - WD3000HLHX / Corsair Neutron Series GTX CSSD

I have been using CPUID Hardware Monitor to keep an eye on the temperatures and noticed that Im idling around 28-30c on the cores, and when running Prime95 they reach about 67-70c. I have the H80i installed per the instructions to have the fans pull the air in from the outside, I have looked all over to see which would be the best way to have the fans setup to pull fresh air in or to have them push the air out. Which would be the best? There are 2 fans in the Corsair Obsidian Series 650D the one in the front pulling air in, and the one mounted in the top to push the air out.

The focus of this build was mainly for gaming, but I also do digital art in Photoshop, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Great mid range build, I'm running a similar setup myself. You can get those velociraptors really cheap off ebay, consider searching there for them. With the extra money, I'd buy a Seagate barracuda 2tb drive. You can get them for about 90$ on NCIX or Newegg. Then I'd put the two velociraptors in raid 0.

EDIT: I'm guessing 2 tb is alot for you, but I suggested that because it's at the same price as 1tb drives.Great deal.

There is absolutely no reason to have a 850w PSU for that build, even if you were to go SLI with two GTX 660 Ti cards in the future.

You could easily get a 650w unit and still have plenty of headroom for future expansion.

The reason I went with that PSU is that it was the cheapest modular PSU I could find, plus it will allow me to use it for future builds.

Just want to get some opinions, turned on the computer after a twelve hour rest and loaded up CPUID Hardware Monitor and noticed that at idle two of the four cores where sitting at 35~37c while the other two where sitting at ~26c. Is it normal for one or two of the cores to be 10c higher then the rest of them?

I also used RealTemp 3.70 as well to check the temperatures.

/sigh Not even 48hrs into having it all put together and Im getting all kinds of crashing on the video card drivers. Anyone have any ideas on what would be causing this? What happens is, when Im running anything (can be a game (Diablo3 / StarCraft2 / TERA / Heaven Benchmark / FFXIV Benchmark / and even using Chrome / Firefox just browsing online)) I sometimes get a white/green/red/blue checker like board that fills the entire screen then the system will either lock up or the drivers will crash and recover. I have a support ticket out to EVGA and was seeing if anyone had some ideas before I hear back from them. I believe its a GPU issue, I had been watching the temp with GPUz and even under load it got no higher then 65~67c.

Well after some long emails to and from EVGA, they concluded that the GPU may have been bad and setup a RMA for it. Since Im going to be waiting for RMA processes, I need to find something to keep me occupied with my build. I have been looking/reading around about case fans, my question is:

The Corsair 650D came with (2) 200m (front intake / top exhaust, I been thinking about replacing them with the Corsair AF/SP fans. I plan on putting (2) SP120 HPs(it looks like I can mount (2) there if I use zipties to mount it to the case since there are no mounting points for 120s that I can see) in the front to help push air past the hard drive bays, but for the top is where I dont know what would be best. Would using a (1) AF140 be better then using (2) AF120s? I know that more doesnt really mean its better, but with all of my reading/searching I havent really been able to find an answer, and I wouldnt mind getting some people's opinions. Thanks!

look so far with ur build everything seems perfect ,

the temperature for cpu is normal the prime95 push the computers to reach crazy limits
u can play anygame and see ur temperatures will never go that high
regarding the airflow nice u set it right and yes what u found out from ur research is correct it just make sense for the cpu sake (to get fresh air to cool the radiator means u have to pull air from outside of case and that result in better temps for cpu) however depends if u r in hot room that wont work biggrin.gif
also it is not that huge difference in temperatures it depends on systems so u Try to test and check it both ways

my suggestion is leave the front Fan a it is
let the h80i get air into the case, and mount 2 fans on the top to get air out of the case [Air Series AF140 Quiet Edition High Airflow 140mm Fan] or [Air Series AF120 Performance Edition High Airflow 120mm]

Regarding ur setup in general its nice and good don't worry just calm down i was like that lol with my 1st build
for future to just test for sure its gpu issue could use the Internal Graphics and run the monitor on it biggrin.gif just plug in motherboard to check for sure that gpu was the issue but anyway u did RMA
