Damn Conroe's !!!

Thread Starter
Well, my problem looks like this...I bought an IC2D e6600 about 2 months ago,it's stepping B2...anyway, tried almost everything on it (from stock cooling to refrigiration gas to being stuck now on water cooling, and temps ma out at about 40*C...), and I can't seem to get it to work at over 3.4GHZ !!! It's killing me already ! ...

I have an Asus P5W Dh Deluxe mobo (bios 1602), 1Gig Super Talent PC6400CL4 DDR2 (2x512MB) - runs all the way to 945MHZ @ 4-4-4-12 CR2T ,that's pretty nice...and a Radeon x1900xtx (modded from xt) 716/800 all running on an Antec TruePower 550W PSU !!!
Please help me out on this issue...as soon as possible !!! I have to mention i also tried the "simple pencil v-mod" that's out now as a fad...but with no succes, probably i have to sand-paper the resistor a bit to get it to work ? coz no amount of pencil will make the MCH or VCORE go up !!! And the problem is that I can;t actually connect (succesfully) the to ends of the resistor...

Please help ! Much apreciated ! Have fun !

Some Conroe chips clock well and scale well with voltage while others hit a brick wall. Your issue could be the motherboard too. The P5WDH is quite the buggy motherboard, and isn't very popular. I recommend selling it and getting a P5B Deluxe, the new Giga-Byte DS3 revision (w/the C2 Chipset) or waiting for DFI's upcoming and long awaited RD600 motherboard, which shows great results from preliminary testing.

Good luck with your decision!

EDIT: Heres some pictures of the new RD600 motherboard.

The P5W DH Deluxe is still perfectly fine for overclocking. It just requires modding to raise the higher strap which can't be done properly with just a pencil, you're gonna have to break out the soldering iron.

I do recall a couple of stickies regarding the P5W DH Delluxe on the XS forums, I'd advise ou to look through them there (the site is down for me but hould be back up soon). There's details on how to perform the vMod that increases the strap on the motherboard along with resolutions to any BIOS issues.

wow. your ram is running pretty high. im quite sure your gonna be able to get a higher clock if you keep your ram around the 800.

Well...i see about the soldering iron...i've tried it on abit nf7-s (back then...thos were the good days...with hard mod and soft mod altoghether...), so i proved myself I have a steady hand...but what should I solder, and where ? if you know some links to some hard v-mod pages...I'd really apreciated ! Oh, and another thing...the am isn't high enough (it runs all the way to 1134MHZ @ 5-6-6-18-6 CR2T, altough unstable, but it boots ok into windows...and it passes tests at about 1088MHz @ 5-5-5-15-5 CR2T) i've proved that to myself, the only issue that I really know about my system is that it's perfectly stable at my current settings : IC2D e6600 @ 3.4GHz, FSB 378, Turbo setting in the bios, PCIex CLk @ 110MHz, 33.33 PCI, 2.4V on memory (@945MHz 4-4-4-12-4 CR2T), 1.7V on CPU (kinda high but maxes out at what i've said earlier ~ 40*C, while idleing @ 32-35 - I use Aquagate with a modified fan), and other voltages are 1.5 FSB, 1.65 VMCH and 1.2v ICH (so all max voltages, the board can take as standard). So to get back to the original idea, I've found that the processor is capable of booting up at 405 x 9 = 3645MHz but the limiting factor I think remains the MCH and CPU (1.65, and 1.7 for the cpu)...i think with the current cooling solution I could easily hit 1.8 for the CPU in order to gain a few extra 100MHz or so, and about 1.85-1.95 on the MCH (i've put 2 fans on the mosfets and N/B to keep things cool, and the system temp dropped from the original - no mod - temps of 43*C !!! to a normal 34*C !!! So, I don;t know what else to add here...I'm still waiting for some good feedback for these issues...Thanks again !

dude. if you just drop your setting a bit you can max out your CPU. just lock the PCI-ex to 100, drop the ram to the next setting (maybe 8xx mhz).

I did that already...I did drop everything all the way i could (PCIe to 90, mem to PC4200 or something like that...and maxed all voltages )...and still I can't get the damn thing to work passed 3400 MHZ @ 1.7Vcore without it STOPing in 2 runs of Orthos prime !!! It won't pass 2 seconds not even at 3411 MHZ ...could you believe my luck ? Well, i did some research today, and found out that if I drop the multi to 8 the board maxes out at about 408Mhz FSB => 408x9 = 3672 or so MHZ on the CPU, but with 8 = 3264, so at that speed the CPU could run tests, also i dropped the mem down to about 500MHz, so no problems there...but the PC would only BOOT and sometimes get into windows...but THAT'S IT !!! Nothing else ! Is it my luck and I've got the worst CPU on the market ? or is something like voltages and a bad choice of something in the system (ram, vid card, motherboard) that's holding me back ?! I think with more voltage on the core and MCH i could boost up to 3500 MHz which is my desired value...I mean, at least get a 1100MHz+ over the standar 2400Mhz...not that 1GHz over the standard isn't much, especially for me, because I used to have a Newcastle AMD Athlon 64 2800+ wich ran at only 2300Mhz (so only 500Mhz overclock)...so 1000MHZ overclock is quite good and workable for me...but I get pissed of in seeing so many of you lucky guys out there, having your way with these CPU's and mobo's !!! Please help me out some more....
Oh...i must mention, the site is broken for me to, www.xtremesystems.org t4ct1c47...but thanks for the info ! I did see the forum threads though...Thanks !

Well, any more info you can supply, I would gladly put to good use !
Thanks all of you once more...really apreciate the support! Best f***ing 24/7 support EVER !!! Overclock.net RULEZ !!!

korndog2003, my CPU maxes out at 40*C ON LOAD @ 1.7Vcore using water cooling, at standard voltages it stays within 1-2*C over room temp (20*C) so it's quite a solution...but thanks for the info....tell me something new !!! I mean, C2D is the best proc out there with absolutely no power draw (relative to those power hungry Prescotts and other CPU's) LONG LIVE INTEL !!!

At 1.7VCORE? Dude, you need to turn it down...

That's waaay more than normal people put through their 65nm chips.
Stick to 1.6V for 24/7 use!
