Overvolted two WD20EZRXs (need help with TVS diode)

Thread Starter
Hello there. Without realising what I was doing, I plugged my 19v laptop brick into my RAID1 box which housed two WD20EZRX (2TB WD Green) drives. Needless to say, my day went a bit downhill from there.

I have previously heard about overvolt diodes on hard drives, so I've been busy researching them all day.

I believe I've located the TVS diode/s on the drives, but I want to be sure before I go snipping things.

Here's a picture of the PCB from a WD20EZRX:

I've labeled (in yellow) what those two diodes have printed on them. Interestingly (well, to me. I'm not expert in this field), on one of the drives, the diode labeled "6QE RB16" is labeled "6QE RB17".
I guess they started using a 16v TVS over a 17v (or vice versa) at some point?

Anyway, are these the TVS diodes? If so, I guess the drive has two?

I ran a multimeter over the diodes. On the drive with the RB17 and RB12, the RB17 is shorted but the RB12 appears to be intact (multimeter was displaying .7). On the drive with the RB16 and RB12, the multimeter is telling me both are shorted.

So, what do I snip? Both TVS diodes on both drives, or should I leave the diode which appears to be fine.

Thanks.

Your drive is likely done, but if you are handy with a soldering iron and don't have anything to loose, go for it. As long a the TVS diodes are within spec, have it. Though my guess is that there is likely more damage to the drive than just the board.

All the data on the drives is also on other drives.

I removed the TVS diodes from one of the drives, didn't seem to work. Would it be worth ordering new PCBs for them?

Probably not. There is a high likelihood that the pre-amp chip and possibly the heads on the drive are damaged, and who knows what else. It would be better to just get new drives and save yourself the trouble.

Ok, thanks for the tip.

Was always going to get new drives (I've ordered them), but it would have been good to utilize the old drives in a more stable environment (like in my PC). Not to worry.

Is there usually a limit (voltage) to what a drive can take before the TVS diodes are ineffective?

Usually, from what I understand, no more than +/- 5% on the 5 and 12v rails.
