Fractal Design Define R4 vs Corsair Obsidian 550D

Hi guys,
I have almost all the parts for my build and the one thing that is taking me so long to decide on is the case. I have been researching all kinds of cases from budget $35 cases to the better ones that cost around $150. I have realized that the case is the one part that I will probably keep and reuse for future builds. So, I want something that is future proof and want to try to keep for a long time. So in the course of my research I narrowed my list to the Fractal Design or this Corsair. Here is generally what I am looking for:
  • A case that can fit a wide assortment of motherboard sizes(ex: Atx, mirco atx etc). I definelty need something to fit Micro ATX since that is the board I am running now.
  • No windows or crazy Led fans or lights. A light for power on and harddrive activity is good.
  • All black or mostly black in color
  • Don't need it to hold a ton of harddrives. I will probably only ever do 2 drives at max
  • As quite as possible. This one is big as the user of this machine stresses this. My build will not be overclocked and I will probably not even run a discrete GPU. If I do, it will be 1 card to take come load off the CPU.
  • USB 3.0 ports on the front. 2 or more would be great. 1 would be so so.

So in having these requirements, these 2 cases really caught my eye. I had all but decided on the Fractal design. It looks wicked solid, not too big, good color, and very solid. The other main thing being it is supposed to be very quite with all the quite fans and a lot of sound dampening. The main thing I don't like about it(holding me back from buying) is the lack of a HDD light. This is important for me as I do use this. I have tested myself and I do use it. I have no clue why they wouldn't include this simple feature. I also read a few people saying that the fractal is not as quite as one would think.

So given all this, which one should I get? Which one is more silent? Cost is not a concern for these 2, as I can get either one for about the same price. Which one can I hope to keep for the future for other builds?

Thanks.

Tough choice man. I was really in the same boat myself. Both cases are great. I like the outside of the R4 better, but I like the inside of the 550D better than the R4. I have a 550D now and I just ordered the R4 window for my 2nd system. The 550D has lots of room inside more than the R4 I think. So I think in my case it came down to looks. I like the cleaner look of the R4. But again the 550D is also a awesome case. If the 550D had a smooth front like the R4 I would pick the 550D over the R4, just for the room inside the case. Its really a 50/50 shot you can't go wrong with either case..

I don't know much about the 550D, but I have an R4 and its absolutely the best case Ive ever had for sure. Ive had lots of cases. Antec 900, Antec 902, CM storm scout, NZXT Phantom, NZXT Tempest 410, Graphite 600t and some other ones. The R4 is soooo nice to work with, and the build quality blew me away. sometimes I just like to fondle it lol.

I have never even heard of this company and these cases are not out on newegg yet. Interesting. Do you have personal experience with this company/cases?

Looks like this is a company from Germany. These cases seem very popular in Europe and are being sold in the US for the first time soon. I don't see any info on these cases except the links you provided. The D1 has definetly taken some styling cues from the Fractal Design.

The D2 adds another case to my list of possible choices...

Another personal vote for Define R4. Fantastic case, and I love mine.
