Hey Guys/Gals..

Thread Starter
Just joined the board this evening as I've just completed building my first ever rig and was looking for some tips on OC and components.

First off, I want to compliment the board administrator and all members for running a wonderful mb. I've always been a casual comp user interested in taking more of a hands-on approach, but afraid to try; after reading only a few threads here, I've seemingly increased my comp knowledge twofold. As I'm also new to OC, I'd also like give a big thanks to NoAffinity for his crash course on OC.

If the case that anyone's interested, my first build is as follows:
C2D E6600 (Arctic Freeze 7 Pro + AS5), P5B systemboard (in retrospect, I probably should have gone with a different MB), 2GB Kingston HyperX 6400 DDR2 (512X4), 320GB WD Caviar SATA, EVGA 8800GTS all in a SAGITTA black gloss case (I know, but I like the lights ). Currently running only @ stock speed, though I'll be giving it a spin soon as I figure out the BIOS.

Look forward to meeting/chatting with you all soon.

Cheers,
TRiP

Welcome to OCN! Nice rig you have there, and don't worry, the P5B is one of the best overclockers for Core 2 Duo, so good choice. Enjoy your stay here-you will learn lots!

Thanks guys.

Where does one download/acquire the utilities necessary for OC (ie. Stability testing/temp controls)?

Google FTW! Look for:

Prime95
Orthos Beta
Speedfan
Everest Ultimate
memtest86
SuperPI

Those are all you need to start off with anyways. Tons more you can get once you get into benchmarking and other things.

careful chummy.....overclocking is easy to get caught up in. It's like a drug. Im totally sraight edge....so it's REALLY addicting to me

I pushed my old s939 3000+ from 1.8GHz to 2.9GHz on air cooling. Yeah sure did destroy the chip after time.

Dont tinker with voltages if you can help it. Get your OC on stock voltages and you're rockin.

Watch your temperatures. You shouldn't be running too hot idle. Remember...40 degrees idle means NADA. Under load it's prolly gonna spike to 55-60 degrees depending on cooling.

Lastly...get your chip's thermal paste redone. Get some Arctic Silver 5 and place the proper ammount on there. OC 200-400MHz....prime it...test the stability, and repeat. Download Orthos. It'll prime your CPU. REALLY PUSH IT to the breaking point to see if your overclock will hold up. Run it for 12-24(much better) hours. If it fails....overclock was too much. If it passes....push her further.

You dont wanna run an unstable CPU. If you cant run Orthos for ATLEAST 12 hours without crashing....dont run it. You're risking messing it up.

Sorry for the novel man. I just got into overclocking last year...and I dont have much money to toss around. I take ALL percautions

I was going to go with the 7950 -- and, while the 8800 was more than I wanted to spend -- I wanted to make sure that I got enough play out of the machine and wouldn't be forced to upgrade in a couple of months (since it's a build from scratch). Thought about going for the GTX, but couldn't rationalize it....
