[WIRED] What to Expect From Windows Blue - Page 4

Windows 7 is the mike tyson of the OS world.

Yes, I have used Windows 7, I've been using it since Beta. Infact I have just upgraded all of my machines from Windows 7 to Windows 8.

Windows 8 is basically Windows 7 with a few tweaks. It uses the same kernel (It's been upgraded quite a bit though), a modified UI and adds a few pretty awesome features. If you want me to go through the enhancements in list form, let me know and I'll quite happily do that for you.

As mentioned in the above posts, the start menu is SO easy to bring back, there is tons of freeware/software out there that will bring it back for you. I personally use Start8 and I have to say, it's much better than the stock Windows 7 start menu by far.

People are complaining that Windows 8 is designed for touch interfaces... Have you EVER used Windows 7 on a tablet? It's the worst possible combination you could ever conceive. And to answer to your next complaints "Why not bring a second OS out for touch?" Simply because it will be too confusing for the consumer. Not only that, it will require much more resources to develop on both platforms instead of just a single platform. (Not talking about Windows RT here).

Yes the OS is great, some quirks like a annoying error that pops up when you run out of v-ram that minimizes what your doing. Disabling desktop composition fixes that while saving some v-ram as well, something I like about 7 TBH. Now before Windows 7 I used windows vista, why you might ask, because windows xp sucks. While I never had any driver problems that struck many other, once it hit sp1 the OS was pretty solid. In fact Vista and 7 are not that different, if you think different then your vista experience must have ether been short or with a crap PC.

As for windows 8, I also jumped into it after it came out for the reduced price. After I installed it I also installed Start8 shortly after so my experience is setup the same way 7 was setup. I find windows 8 better then 7 in every way. I still have a start menu and I boot directly to my desktop. I never see the metro menu, though any time I want I can pop it up on my second screen and gain access to metro. Pretty nice to be able to access metro if needed as I intend to get a windows 8 tablet when better CPUs come out for them. The entire OS is snappy and quick, overall a lightweight OS. Only thing I don't like is no disabling desktop composition. While windows 8 doesn't use as much v-ram as windows 7, when you disable desktop composition in 7 you drop it down quite a bit making it run lower then windows 8 would. I also Like the copying system better and the new task manager is a nice plus. Plus the entire ribbon UI is a solid improvement as well. The desktop side of windows 8 is largely unchanged other then not having a start menu by default.

If the only thing people have against windows 8 is the metro side and not having a start menu, their are programs to fix that. Other then that Windows 8 is a upgrade to 7 in every way, I for one like the one OS approach. No need to have two OSes using the same kernel underneath, The way windows 8 does it is only a start but in the right direction. Anyone who hates windows 8 probably never really tried to use it.

I completely agree with this.

If not...find a new OS that treats you like you think you should be treated or make your own. There's plenty of choice and change comes to those who make it.

They will come to their senses if they ever want to make another OS again that will be sold to professional environments in big quantities. We might however be in for a period where 7 will take over the business world just like XP did. When companies start switching to something else because 7 isn't offered anymore and MS sees a drop in marketshare, that's probably when Ballmer finally realizes that different markets have different needs. And that a company can branch out if it wants but it should also continue to do what it does best.

Personally, I'll just refuse to buy an OS for my desktop that was designed for touch devices. The OS is not fit for purpose.

Thanks for the information, but "leaked" is being so overused these days. There's no way that every new product from every company has information "leaked" all over the place like they claim it to be. If loose lips sink ships, there would be so many terminations, NDA violations and sunken "ships" at this point. And this is just what is "leaked" to the public. Imagine what would be going from company to company if "leaking" was actually this rampant.

I agree 100%. I will also agree with those that say Win8 isn't a bad OS. It's pretty solid from my understanding. However, it tries to be too many different things. A unified OS is a good idea in theory, but not so much in the execution. My phone is an Android, my tablet (such as it is) is an Android (Kindle Fire HD - heavily stripped and Amazon-centric version of Android), my desktop is Windows. I'm OK with this. I can share files between all of these devices, and know the layout of each OS. I don't need or want a "unified" experience.

I've said it countless times. Make 2 OS : Windows MetroOS for mobile (phone / tablet / what not with touch) - Normal Desktop for laptop / netbook / desktop, the end. I hate the current W8. Tried it countless times, even bought it, it simply doesn't do all the things W7 does for me.

I was once a Windows 8 Hater, but mainly just against metro. I currently have Windows 8 installed on my desktop and use Start8. It boots straight to the desktop and i never really have to worry about metro unless i open a pdf.
You all can keep thinking that windows 7 is faster than windows 8, but Windows 7 never went from POST to desktop in 5 seconds flat on bootup for me.

Windows 8 has been the best, most stable and reliable OS the desktop computer has seen since XP service pack 1.

I figured there was at least one person on this planet who does not think Windows 8 was the biggest piece of crap since.... iOS.
I guess I was right. rolleyes.gif

Thats alright, with every peron who settles for Windows 8 were are one step closer to the closed environment Apple iOS that Microsoft is clearly aiming for.

Some people just like to complain. They talk about how much Windows is customizable compared to MacOS but they are always the ones to complain first instead of actually using that customize feature they praise so much...
