Ubuntu Desktop vs Server

Hi Guys.. I am looking build a home server and it will be my first so need some help here..
Well following are the few things i would like to my server to do..
Immeditate Plans
1>Storage /File server
2>Build server for android and other linux programming/learning stuff (which is why i am looking at Linux solution).
3>Torrent Box
Future plans:
4>print server
5>Media streaming to other Window PC and TV (music and movies)

Since this is the first time i am trying to build a server which would be better a desktop or server version of ubuntu.
Will I be able to install software like plex on ubuntu server for media streaming? From what i gather server is streamlined for being more responsive and is CLI and with Webmin a GUI can be got.
Will i need a GPU for media streaming? Is the processing done on the server or on the TV?

Also do suggest a mother board and Cpu for home server. Integrated graphics is good enough right?
How about i3 with anyone of the following mb:
1>GA-B75TN

P.S: Will be using my current desktop to convert to Server.
This unit will have a dual boot with WIn 7 for games untill i can setup another headless server for above said linux stuff.

Ubuntu Server is a very stripped version of Ubuntu and is very lightweight, so it's ideal for building a server from. It will do all of the things you've listed, and Webmin is pretty good for administering it - in fact it's precisely what I use with Ubuntu Server.

You won't need a GPU for media streaming, since that will be handled by the client device (TV, HTPC, whatever). An i3 will be more than plenty; just make sure your monitor can accept whatever video output is on that motherboard you listed.

Rather than dual booting right off the bat, it might be worth playing with a virtual machine running Ubuntu Server, just to get yourself familiar with the software setup.

Thanks parityboy..

I am not new to linux at all after all i work all day at office in that environment.. Anyways i will definitely give a try on virtual machines so not have any issue when setting it up ..

Plan to keep it a headless so no monitor except maybe while installing it..

What do use to stream the media? Plex or something else?

Plex seems to be quite popular. I've not really played with media streaming so I can't really offer any more advice. smile.gif
