Which is why Microsoft must continue to change and adapt, they will never be the same company that existed before mobile scene crashed the industry. Embrace the change. I have said this a thousand times before but; at least Microsoft attempted innovation. Nothing has changed in the desktop OS design scheme for like almost 2 decades. With that being said, I guess I can sort of understand why people are so reluctant to step away from it. It's like taking a 16 year old off of a bottle that they have been sucking on since they were 2 years old.

Change isn't always positive change.

In this case, if you're a desktop user, you just got shafted and offered a compromise that isn't tailored for your system just because MS wants all users under the same roof.

MS doesn't need to be the same company, they can branch out all they want and I would like to see that. I don't like seeing them give the finger to business and power users.

As long as windows 7 is still available they can mess about all they want, but when they finally kill off 7 they better have a suitable replacement for the business side (8 for business style use, is an absolute joke right now).

Is changing the size of a start menu and adding corner shortcuts actually hampering productivity? The only reason it may slow someone down, is in the event that they don't know how to use the operating system. Even then, how long is actually going to take someone to figure it out? Probably a few additional seconds of clicking around no? So we are talking about seconds here. Not hours, or even minutes (which is still silly), but seconds. If business people and power users were THAT worried about their productivity, they would disable their Facebook/Linked-in accounts and never look at image boards or forums like OCN.

I can see you are against merging the OS to many different pieces of hardware. But it actually makes the most sense. Microsoft doesn't want to make a division in their company just to make a tablet OS. Making it cross platform has probably resulted in much lower costs than developing two separate operating systems (well I guess RT, but it's not really that different from windows 8). Plus, this way, when a user figures out how to use windows 8 on the desktop, they already know how to use w8 tablets (for the most part) and vice-versa. I think given the situation, they managed it beautifully and the so called 'compromises' (which I don't agree are compromises) are out weighed by the positives of Windows 8 such as the fast boot time smile.gif.

I think windows 8 has gotten a bad rap that it doesn't deserve. It takes a lot to make something that doesn't resemble apple these days and I think that alone should speak volumes about windows 8 lol.

We're not forced to buy it, yet the pc gamer market is mostly directed at their crappy Operating System Ultra. rolleyes.gif

Just your opinion like anyone else on here bud.

I use w8 myself and have for many months, I would never go near it if I had to use that silly metro page.Sure hope you don't think I am alone in that.

Everyone can argue the merits of w8, harder to argue numbers and they are not on w8's side at all. Slower sales and uptake now than Vista had, it's that bad.

Until MS gives us choice to not use the silly metro page it can't get a bad enough rep as far as I am concerned.

So install another pdf reader like acrobat/foxit instead of using the pre-installed metro version?

You're being far, far too dramatic imo.

Calling Windows 8 "shafting" people who already HAVE the desktop experience they want in Windows 7 is plain false. Windows 8 is something new. What you want still exists in Windows 7.

Calling Windows 8 "shafting" people who LIKE the experience they have in Windows 8 is your personal feelings and opinions being spun as some kind of universal fact, which is obviously not the case.

"Business and power users" are barely done transitioning from XP to W7 at the moment (if at all yet) and they still probably have around ten years or so before Windows 7 fully takes over.

Microsoft can sit on their hands during that time period and release a service pack every few years, or they can begin designing, constructing and fine tuning a new OS design for where they see computing in ten years time (Which is a huge amount of time in the tech world. Phones took less than five years to rapidly transform their use and design) and they are making steady progress. The new yearly release scheme should hopefully see Windows users getting more meaningful updates more regularly too which will help that progress even further.

it doesn't resemble apple because apple made a laptop/desktop hybrid os and ms made a tablet/x86 hybrid. that's why all the w8 gestures were made for touchscreens while the osx ones were made for touchpads. the thing is, touchscreens make zero sense for desktops and not much sense for laptops. i mean they basically just replicate the function of a trackpad while being less ergonomic. extending your arm constantly to do stuff on your laptop is going to be tiring and you have move your hand way more than using a trackpad
