On Win8 vs Win7

I used Start 8 free trail for my first 6 days with Win8, but eventually I just got used to the new UI. For a $30 upgrade it is OK, all the new features under the hood are nice, but if I had a Win7 rig I wouldn't pay $200 to upgrade to Win8 Pro. However I wouldn't mind building/buying a new PC with Windows 8.

Absolutely agree. That's why I snapped up 3 copies at the $15 promo price...

+1.

as a Window 7 user i don't see that much of a need to upgrade. (unless i accidently stumble upon an unsuspecting free copy of W8 pro)
Additionally, some compatibility issues haven't been ironed out completely on Windows 8 so i'd wait till blue and maybe a bit longer. (as long as steam, chrome and benchmarks work on w7 i'm fine biggrin.gif )

Really, start menu and start screen aren't all that different. Both need to be customized to some degree, or they end up cluttered and inconvenient. I think the opponents of both sides should realize that it's not Microsoft's fault that either becomes unwieldy. Most of the time it's due to countless unnecessary entries made by installed programs.

And don't kid yourself. This will be alot more evident once everybody and their mother starts making live tiles for their stuff.

I think the biggest problem with the start screen is the full screen thing. They can't get past that big difference. Which really makes no sense, as you couldn't do anything else while the old start menu was open either. You now just get more "Start real estate". No matter, MS should have kept it an option for those that simply don't like it and/or don't like change. I have no problems with 8 now that I have been using it for months, but I still see the need for an option. More options are almost always better.

I have been using Modern Miix from Stardock to run Metro apps in windowed mode. I don't use many metro apps because I am a multitasker (like most people) and don't like to have one thing occupy the entire space. However, having Metro apps in windowed mode makes them a bit more useful.

It would be interesting if you could really just resize the metro desktop to 1/3 of the left/right screens instead. Metro does serve a purpose but it's just not needed all the time.

Now this is an interesting idea.

He makes it sound like chrome has changed, the desktop has changed, office has changed, games no longer play, there's no more right click, everything is touch, keyboards are no longer used, and there's no performance upgrade...

And put a little icon on the taskbar to launch it! That way you can focus on your windows and only open the Metro Menu when you need to start a new one. Brilliant!

Or you could have a little button on the keyboard (maybe with a Windows logo on it) that opens up a start screen that has everything you want to run pinned to it, unconstrained by the size of a small window that you have to scroll through to see everything... rolleyes.gif
