What kind of foam did you use for the back of the CPU? Could I use the protective shield that it came with?

Indeed. That is precisely what I used.

2,000 grit.

So I realize I need to use a tiny amount but how tiny is tiny exactly, in somethjing that I could relate to?

For a guide, I wrote one over in the AMD cooling section (they really should amalgamate these 2 sections, is there REALLY that much difference between cooling for AMD and Intel?)

You can find it here - (clickme)

It really is that simple, I went for dry sanding as well for the same reasons as the OP, the wet sanding was messy and gave me no added results.

Also as long as you protect against ESD (use the plastic guard that came on your C2D) there really isn't much chance of damaging your CPU as C2D have pads instead of pins. I, however, broke a pin off my opty by accident, so more precautions are needed with CPUs that have pins instead of pads.

Plus, for the OP, C2D are known to have inherently convex IHS's. It would be worth your while sanding it flat if you have already gone through the trouble of sanding your HS.

OT: Its weird you took a picture of the CPU reflecting the OCN banner, I had thought to do the exact same thing, but then realised I couldn't boot my only computer without a cpu in it

Not enough to matter. You're sanding off like 1/100th of a millimeter. Besides, the mounting brackets for the Big Typhoon bolt it to the board, instead of clipping it, so it wouldn't matter anyway.

[n00b questions] Hey guys, how would you lap something? Do I just sand the heatsink or do I do something with the CPU? I'm thinking of doing this with my stock Athlon XP cooler. Thanks [/stupid questions]

various grits of sandpaper (800-2500), patience and a steady hand.

Lapping both surfaces will yield better results, but will VOID YOUR WARRRANTY on the CPU. (Sorry for yelling, but you should know this in no uncertain terms.)

There have been 2 links provided in this thread, chech 'em out. Doing so will be worth your while.

Sorry for this double...

I used 1/2 the amount, then re-seated with 1/3 . I ran it for on the 1/2-amount for a couple of weeks and then tried again w/ less. The temps dropped a couple of C, but that might be accounted for by the winter here in the Northern Hemisphere.

Perhaps you should try with 1/2 and see what you get. I lapped mine to 2500. When I reseated the 2nd time I buffed w/ 2500 and polished it w/ metal polish. Note, if you use a polish you must clean the lapped surfaces(s) with a xylene-based cleaner or high-percentage alcohol to remove all the microsopic particles in the polishing compound, as they will adversely affect the perfomance.
