Dark Space- FX-8350 [Build Log]

This is my new build 2 months of planning, ordering, and researching in action! I have in my grubby little hands: NZXT Apollo Mid-tower case, FX-8350, ASUS M5A99FX Pro 2.0, 8 GB G.Skill Sniper (2x4GB), XFX 750w Semi-modular power supply, Sapphire 7870 XT (it is a thing of beauty!), and a whole host of other computer modification accoutrement! Plans for purchase: WD Caviar Black 1TB Hard disk, Windows 7 Professional, optical drive. I do know how much better an SSD is than a mechanical drive, that being said it is in my UPGRADE plans for the future. My budget was 1k and I ended up with 1200 spent on tools and hardware. Thinking that this fall I will do the SSD upgrade.

Plans for modifying case:
Add custom top window.
Do three layer etched design for side window.
Change airflow from side->back to front->back
Add custom switch bay for rocker switches and dimmer switch
Add cold cathodes to side panel to light the custom etching
Add LEDs to: Underneath motherboard, top-window, underneath case

All of that tough stuff is done. Phew! Now it's time for my testing phase!

The custom top window with have "Dark Space" as my logo. I am also doing a bit of an odd one... The NZXT on the side "handle" is being cutout and I'm adding a window with my signature and LED backlighting. The LEDs are going to connect through a layout like PSU->Molex>Molex/Fan connector->Fan extender> Switch/LEDs. I can do a wiring diagram if anyone is interested in my madness!

I will be adding some images to this thread (alot of images), but to keep it from reaching gargantuan levels of size, I'm storing all of my images on my photobucket album and only bringing in a few images for each step. There are a multitude of photos that will be steadily added to the album, and I will continue to add photos to the thread.

Update: I ended up with an SSD anyway because my mechanical drive needed to be RMA'd
My temperatures are fair for stock, but I'm going to replace my stock CPU cooler with a cheap aftermarket.

EDIT:
I replaced my Sapphire 7870 XT with a Gigabyte 3x Windforce r9 290.

All my pretties! Warning! I may get a bit...crazy... over my parts. It's all in a day's work!

FX-8350

M5A99FX Pro 2.0 - I did take it out of the bag later to run a test bench on the core components, but I didn't take any flash photography for fear of scaring the magic blue smoke inside of it.

Sapphire 7870 XT w/ Boost - So... beautiful...

XFX 750w Semimodular Power supply

G.Skill Sniper 1866 RAM 2x4GB

Xigmatek 120MM Blue LED fans

Xoxide Order- Cold cathodes, C molding, thumbscrews, CCFL extender, and sound dampening kit.

5M of Blue, waterproof strip LEDs. Black PCB.

Switches!

This is my etching, somewhat finalized. It's a planet (not Earth, so don't tell me the land masses don't look right) behind a meteor shower and some mountainous terrain.

This is my prep for cutting the hole in the top for the top window.

The new window... I made a slight error... I will now have a crystal clear window to my... Power supply! rolleyes.gif It will have a view into the case as well, so I'm probably going to "frost" the window part over the PSU.

As it stands, I have cut the custom hole in the top of my case, added the LED fans and used the rubber sound dampening screws to prevent noise, and worked extensively on the etching for my side window. Tonight I will post pictures of the fan mounting and begin working on wiring my new lighting.

Worked on getting the wiring started for my lighting. Did a good bit of soldering, measuring, and preparation.

First, I peeled back the silicone on my strip LEDs.

Then, I began to solder the leads to the LED strips.

On the switch ends, I crimped quick release terminals. I also connected them using a fan extender cable. Will be connected to the power supply through a Molex to fan connector.

I also sealed the soldered connections with silicone, which is setting up now. I don't have any images of them lit up to display as of right now, I will try to finish up the mounting of the lights tomorrow and hook up my PSU to get the lights to shine, baby SHINE!

Just because I got some subs today, I decided to work through the weariness... and the alcohol... and pull out my new PSU, my trusty PSU tester, and the lights and make some brightness happen.

My LEDs, not quite as bright as some I've seen, but plenty bright for my case lighting.

These are my cold cathodes. I didn't mention this in my earlier post, but I removed the PCI controller switch and put quick release terminals to connect to my rocker switches. They give off a really nice soft light.

Tomorrow, I will try to mount some of the lighting. I probably won't be able to do the custom bay this week due to lack of power tools, but I may choose to improvise.
