[build log] Water cooled 800d - now with rigid tubing!

Haha, I did not name my new build, but I have really enjoyed working on it so far. I have been building my own PC's for over 20 years, and have gone through most of the phases. I no longer desire 50 fans in my PC, or a ton of LED lit fans, lighting, etc. I actually enjoy reading other people's build logs and admiring the bling, because I do think it can look really good, just not for me these days.

This is kind of an upgrade of my current PC, since I will be using some existing parts, and is still a WIP, since I have not yet decided on the GPU side of things.

New Parts:

MB Maximus V Extreme
Cooling: Swiftech H2O-X20 Elite Series - 320 radiator
PSU: Corsair 860
Boot drive: 500GB Samsung 840

Existing parts:

CPU: I-3770k - been running at 4.5ghz on prev MB cooled via a corsair H50
Ram: 16gb 1600 Ripjaws
GPU: MSI Twin Frozr Golden Edition 465 flashed to 470.
Data drive: 3TB

My goal was keep things as clean as possible, while still plugging in everything, including the Asus EZ Ports for my future GPU upgrade. I probably spent easily as much time cabling as I did the rest of the build. Something I really enjoy.

No real bling anywhere, but I like the way it is turning out. I currently game at 1200p, but the plan is to move to 1600p in the future (I am a one monitor person). I kind of want to go SLI just for the fun of it, but being currently at 1200p, it seems overkill. As you can see from the pictures, I already modded the case for the bottom rad. I do want to have a completely separate loop for my GPU(s).

I am keeping my eyes open for someone upgrading to titans to maybe score a setup with 680's or 670's.

The pictures are of the PC fully built and functional, just no GPU installed yet (running off of the HD4000 for the moment). I think it turned out really clean, and I am highly impressed by the 800D case.

Nice build sir! Head over to the marketplace on these forums and I am sure you can find a good deal on some nice gpus with blocks on them already! If there is nothing just toss up a wanted add.

This guy has two 680's so maybe worth a look. http://www.overclock.net/t/1370486/3x-gtx-titans-2-zotac-gtx-680-2gbs-fs/0_20

I see you have removed the bottom hard drive cages. Was it any trouble?

I removed the bottom in anticipation of a rad down there, it was not hard. I used this guide, but never did remove the top most rivets that hold the panel to the front though, I found it unnecessary.

I really think I want to mount my rad down there on its side, which means hacking up the side panel, but otherwise I do not like the idea of intaking air from the bottom and heating it up going through the rad before it even hits the part of the case that is holding the motherboard.

I was thinking a side mount rad with fans pulling air through the rad and expelling it out the side of the case would work better. I would think the the negative pressure from the exhaust fans in the upper part of the case would still be able to pull air into that section of the case, but the air would be cool instead of heated up by a pass through the rad. Hope that makes sense.

Ive got the same problem. I want to mount the rad on its side but I do not want to cut the side panel cause I have I have to look at it so if I make a mistake im going to be staring at it all the time. I think im going to mount it on the floor purely for that reason. I do not think that it should harm temperatures that badly.

I think if I cut the side panel, I will do it on the back side, and make a jig out of something that I can clamp on to the panel to make sure it is as perfect as I can get it. You are right though, one mistake and I would be pissed about jacking up my brand new 800D!

I have a quick question...
Since you're using the onboard Video, I am wondering what kind of games*if any* are you playing with that.

I plan on upgrading my set-up with some Ivy action and I will want to run the onboard video till I get a proper discrete card*GTX670 FTW*.

My main concern is how does it run with RTS such as Starcraft 2 and stuff like that.

I am cheating at the moment. I am still on my old rig while building this new one. I harvested the cpu and ram from my HTC and I am waiting on my SSD to arrive wed to complete the build and move my GPU over from this current rig. When the SSD arrives, I build everything out, making sure it has all the junk i need, then last step will be to move over my GPU and switch to full time use.
