Crucial M4 or Samsung 840 - Page 2

I currently own both. See sig rig. I ran my M4s in RAID 0 for quite a while, sold one and now use an 840 pro for OS and M4 for games etc. I can say that I like them both a lot, but I can  say I had absolutely NO problems with my M4s they are so solid. I never really worry about it at all. The 840 on the other hand gave me a little bit of a problem when I first got it. I had corrupt files on it that required a new install of windows 7 after my first install. I have no idea if that was the drive itself acting up or something else.

Also, have had a few other buggy problems on the new install, but I am 99% sure those are other software related problems, and not the SSD itself. \

If you care at all about looks, the 840 is sexy. Very sleek, thin with nice mirror like finished edges, and a cold black finish. The M4 is simple and kinda ugly, but only matters if looks are a factor.

Some will talk about the lifespan of the drives. I have seen so many people talk about this differently. And seen different sources on the issues to not be able to say one way or the other. I have seen sources say 30 or more years, and also seen some say around 4 years. I haven't done my homework enough to know for sure, but if that is a concern then go with the 840 PRO.

My M4 will outperform the 840 in a couple categories when I run benches, I would post them, but am not home at the moment. They are both excellent drives. It really is a tough choice, but let price be your deciding factor if nothing else matters to you. I chose the 840 as my new drive because of its reputation, and performance specs. Still love the M4 though.

Longevity, sustainability and overall performance are the major factors. The money spent does matter. It is just not as a crucial. I could throw a couple grand into a system right now to be modest. I would much rather spend my hard earned cash more wisely. The M4 does seem like a better value. I do some editing with the system. Based on performance alone, I doubt it is going to be worth the extra cost. SSDs in the future might be worth it. I am not 100% yet. I am closer than before. lol thumb.gif

Go for the 840 Pro now and upgrade to the M500 once it's sustainability and reliability has been proven. thumb.gif

Mostly true, but each one I buy gets faster and faster, and less expensive.

I chose the Samsung 840 Pro 512GB SSD. I racked my brain for a very long time thinking about it. The main reason why I chose it was for the longer warranty. I also liked the internals slightly better. Performance levels are not much higher; therefore, it played a minor role in my decision making process. Thank you all for your help!

didnt you say money was a factor? so u went and got one of the most expensive SSD? rolleyes.gif

i would never get something that big maybe raid 128 or a 256 if theres a sale on it. (im feeling the shift in best $1/gig right now 256gb seems to be the best right now)

cant wait until the M500 comes out.
