Building a rig, looking for some opinions and advice

Hey guys, so time for an upgrade from my 1055t system. Gonna post the specs of my old system, its pretty outdated but it served me well, just looking to step up a bit.

CPU: 1055t @ 3.7 ghz
Motherboard: Asus M4A89GTD PRO
PSU: Corsair TX850 V2
CPU Cooling: Thermaltake Venomous X-RT
RAM: 2 x 4 G.Skill 1600mhz
GPU: HIS Iceq 6950 2gb
Case: Zalman z11
HDDs: 4 hdds
320gb WD
1 TB Hitachi 7200 rpm
1TB WD Green
500gb WD
Now the hdds are kinda weak, especially since im using a 320gb with a mere 8 meg cache as my windows drive, rest is storage. Will explain more in a bit.
BD/DVD: 2 LG drives

I was waiting to see what Nvidia and AMD will do with their next gen cards and since their recent roadmaps show that the cards are coming next year I decided not wait and build something now. I am on a budget, but still wanting something high end. Im looking at about 1500-1700 for the pc, maybe a bit more if i must but the less I'm able to spend the better as I am a student and have to pay for other things. my trusty 24 inch viewsonic is still looking good so maybe in the future upgrade to a 3d one, But for now no monitors, just the machine.

I'll be recycling some parts from my old pc. I like the Z11 case so I'll be keeping that, the BD/DVD drives are fairly new so those stay, the 850 watt psu is fairly new as my last one blew up xD cause it was and Ultra 750watt that i got for cheap, well i learned my lesson about cheap psu and that was when i had barely any expreience and luckily it didn't take anything with it. I'll be keeping the 2 1 tb hdds and the 320 and 500 will be gonne lol. So the 1500-1700 will be for the rest of the pc.

Here's where I need some opinions/advice/suggestions, I'm looking to upgrade to an FX-8350 for the CPU. Now I know Intel is better but also more pricey. Even through i said 1500-1700, if i can spend less then that then thats my preference. I always do a huge amount of multitasking and video encoding, photoshoping and im getting into mixing music recently. My issue with the 3570k is the lack of hyperthreading, If I go intel then 3770k would prob be what i would want and its a bit pricey. I feel like the FX-8350 is a good balance since it does have 8 threads and the price is looking much better. Opinions on this appreciated.

For the motherboard, now this is another stump cause i will have 4 days off next week and thats when I plan to build my machine so Id like to get the parts before the 29th. I'm going for the sabertooth board, however im aware the gen 3 comes with pcie 3.0 and will be here really soon. Any idea when the shipments come in? Or should i just go for the normal one, cause if I decide to crossfire/tri-fire I fear the 2.0 may be a bottleneck. I probably won't but its something id like as an option.

I got my 7970 a few days ago, the Gigabyte OC rev 2.1 thats voltage locked, through i did my research before and i flashed the ghz edition bios with success and stable at 1100/1500 so I'm happy with that. Top temp was 64 during the Valley 1.0 benchmark and crysis 2 so looks good to me.

Some opinions on my psu would be appreciated, if it will enough for my system cause i have like 5 led fans and 2 normal ones, 4hdds and 2 drives, plus i plan to oc my system as far as i can take it. If i decide crossfire i have a feeling i'll need to upgrade through.

Also, you guys think i should get a new cpu cooler or stick with the venomous X-RT and save some money?it works fine for my 1055t so with some new arctic silver 5 it should be ok on the 8350, how are the temps when overclocked? im looking at about 4.7 ghz oc, think tha'd be possible with this cooler?

And last but not least I'll be getting a 3tb storage and an ssd for windows. I was looking at the 256 840 samsung pro, any other suggestions with similar performence? Also Im still debating if I need a 256 gb or 128 gb ssd. I was gonna have windows and software on it with maybe a few games that need the extra boost like crysis from loading faster. New games are big and i dont want to overfill the ssd as it impacts performence so maybe 256 would be a good choice? Opinions appreciated.

Sorry for the long text, just looking for a second opinion on these things from you guys here xD.

As for your processor upgrade, i would just go with the 3770k. But if that's the case, I would wait for some holiday like Memorial day where they have bigger sales. Prices for processors like the 3770k will be much cheaper than it is now. This processor will last you for a long period of time, you wouldn't need the upgrade in the future. Though its costly, it's performance should brush it off. This is just a question for you whether or not you want a better performance but money racking processor or a cheap with not-so-well performance. That's my opinion on your processor upgrade. But good luck to you on the upgrades man!

^^ spoken like a true intel fanboy LOL

if your a gamer the fx-8350 will be great. Great oc'ing potential and great bang for buck. this will be fine for the long hall as well.

Also note the new intel haswell chips have an issue with usb 3.0 and drives connected to it corrupting and deleting the data. No apparent fix until june/july. Personally id be voting for AMD at the moment....atleast its stable!

in terms of your SSD i have a 128gb OCZ agility 3 and have used 43gb on OS. If your budget allows bigger is always better!

Same with PSU 850-900 is normally more than anyone will ever need but some people like the 900+ PSU's. For the xfire setup and overclock an 850-900 will be fine. personal brand favs are corsair, silverstone.

I have a hyper 212 evo on my 8350 stock clock, never cracks 45 at the moment. So i'd say youd be pretty safe. If temps got up there perhaps a h80/h90 cpu cooler??

on your pci 3.0 issue the cards are still well off utilizing the bandwidth that 3.0 can support. So i wouldnt really stress about that. Yes itd be nice to have but you probably wont use its full potential for a long time to come (please anyone correct me if im wrong)

good luck. thumb.gif

Venomous X-RT is still a top end Air Cooler. Only twin towers coolers
will out perform it. Maybe get some nice fans for it. Single fan with good static pressure
or push-pull config if you want something quieter. GT AP-15 are very nice. got on on my lapped TRUE
unvolted.

What's your monitor, and what programs are most important to you (which games, any professional applications, that sort of thing).?

Thanks for the replys guys, really appreciate it. So Ima get my parts tmoro, if my retailer gets the sabertooth gen 3.0 tmoro then ima get the 8350/sabertooth build. Theres a pretty nice deal for the 3770k atm there and i might go with that if im not able to get the gen 3 board. Anyway, good to hear my cooler is still good, I know it was one the high end when i bought it but that was while ago lol.

My z11 case is filled with fans so airflow isn't an issue but since I'll be overclocking as high as possible, wanted to make sure my venomous was good for that. As for SSD, i decided on the 256 SSD samsung pro, any other brands i might be able to get for cheaper with same/better/close performance?

My monitor is a viewsonic 1080p monitor so for that resolution i honestly doubt i'll need crossfire, maybe when i upgrade monitors in the future. I do tons of multitasking, video encoding, photoshops, some rendering. As for games, I want to be able to play high end games with max gfx and aa at least 30 fps. Games like Skyrim with tons of gfx mods, enb heavy modded gta IV, crysis 3, tomb raider, Far Cry 3. i get around 50-60 fps far cry 3 wih the 7970 at 4x aa so im satisfied with that on my old system. Skyrim unfortunetly is processor heavy so the 1055t bottlenecks me heavily hence why i want the 3770k or 8350.

How high did you want to go on the overclock? I have the sabertooth r2.0 and an fx-8320 and it's running at 4.6GHz stable right now. Great board in my opinion. Runs anything I throw at it.
