Sapphire 7950 VDDC question

So after forever and a day, at least it seems, I finally got some form of control for my card. Turns out the 3L version doesn't work in MSI as it runs a custom PCB apparently. No worries, from what I can tell the vddc does change and so I'm somewhat happy (mem voltage won't, not a loss though). My issue is this, extensive droop on load. I can set the vddc to 1.25 in Trixx but it seems that under load (even if not throttled) the vddc drops to 1.2 (varies). It drops approximately 0.35v give or take, is that normal? If so, I won't worry about it. Just makes pinpointing the proper voltage for the speeds I want a bit... Well it's annoying to say the least, especially when I want to bench and wish I could go over 1.3 but that's life.

Probably and most likely Vdroop.

1.3V is regarded as basically the max if you want to keep a decent life span, assuming you can keep temps in check.

kk thanks.

Guess my next question would be, can I run it on air if temps are below 65C? I can't measure VRM temps but I know core temps do not get that high on max fan. In fact, 60C is rarely seen unless I use furmark or something that intense. I don't think Valley (current benchmark) even pushes it up to 60C

I wouldn't run 1.3 on air, the core might be fine temperature wise but without better cooling your vrm temps are probably going to be over 90c, and seeing as you can't monitor them atm (hopefully a gpuz update will help with that in the near future) I wouldn't push the card excessively hard. Many others have said it but furmark is rather useless unless you enjoy baking your card and making the fan spin as fast as possible.

And yes definitely vdroop. My sapphire 7970 had a massive droop, was set to 1250mv in trixx dropped to ~1180mv under load.**

KK, I run boost speeds which ends up (with droop) to about 1.218 or so, that's just a rough estimate I'm throwing out. It gets me 1100-1150 on the core (still testing with games) so that's reasonably acceptable. My ram is the only partly bothersome thing at the moment then, one of them isn't covered by any cooling but it runs 1500 on stock volts (no way to change) so I'm gonna see how it turns out. I generally run it 1475, which isn't too high and they don't seem to complain (the ram chips). 1575 artifacts, so I dropped it to 1500 but 1475 doesn't drop performance too much. Might drop it to 1450, anyways thanks for the input. Keeps my mind at ease knowing the droop isn't that abnormal.

The vram on my 7950 boost (I think it was the 2L version) didn't do more than 1500 stable, didn't seem like sapphire was using the greatest chips for their 7950's.

Got the 3L, hasn't changed much. So I guess it doesn't matter if you can't adjust the vram volts or not eh.

Thanks all for the responses, it's helping me get a better feel of what I'm doing and what to expect. Now I'll have a better idea of what can be done on my friend's 7950. I think it was just set up quick, 1100/1350 which worked fine. I think it's got about the same volts as mine too, so far it hasn't been unstable or I'd have herd about it. lol I think I put his at 1.185v or something? Idk I did a quick setup as I had no clue what to expect (didn't push it too much), this has been a lot better having my own card to run.
