Is the 1155 platform dead? - Page 4

No, 1155 is not "dead". The only platforms I would really consider "dead" would be 478 and anything before it. Those platforms are basically useless at this point in time.

My little brother games on a Core 2 Duo E7300 OC'd to 3GHz and a 8800GT and he is still able to play recent games, yes, the settings get turned way down, but it still plays them and it is still quick when it comes to web browsing and things like that.

Maybe to a enthusiast or someone who edits video recent platforms "die" when something bigger or badder comes out, but to most end users platforms live on for many years even after they have been replaced.

Just my .02 cents on the subject.

Luckily hardware doesn't break down in normal scenarios that easily.

Yeah 1156 is harder to come by than 775. I am really sure why that socket got the axe so fast.

I'm sure its been said already but this is my take on it

First we need to define our Terms, what does your friend mean when he says "dead" obviously he does not mean "not in use" as it is widely in use"

I believe he means there is no longer an upgrade path available for socket 1155 which is Actually not correct, if you have an i3-2100 you still have upgrade options.

perhaps he means that chips are no longer being manufactured for this socket? This would make the most sense though his choice of words is a bit confusing, seeing how many will still be using this socket 4-5 years down the road, In essence every 2 generations of Intel you will end up with a "dead" socket according to your friend due to "tick-tock"

so can you say its a "dead" socket and be correct, Yes. Will this lead to confusion and debate, Yes.

so yeah, pretty much it sounds like someone is looking for an argument, dont even bother answering people like that, they're just looking for a fight in most cases.

Yes, that is basically what I am getting, over double the FPS. Running 2x screens in Eyefinity, 3840x1080, Skyrim went from 18-40ish to 45-100+ FPS outside, still get some stuttering from only 1GB vram, but that is another issue. Rage benchmark rating went from 38 to 93, 98 with a slight OC. Dragon Age 2 went from ~45 to over 100 FPS. Just to name a few off the top of my head. I am sure there will be some games that won't see such a vast improvement, but for the games I have tried so far 120% is fairly consistent.

It isn't just games either. In Handbrake BD and DVD rip times have dropped by more than half. BD rip Avg FPS are ~75 FPS on Normal setting, DVD I have seen higher than 350 FPS. To test when I first rebuilt the system I popped in Deathly Hallows 2, A 3hr BD, it was showing about 55min to complete. It would have taken well over 2hrs on the Q9550. The average 90 minute BD movies takes about ~30 minutes. On the Q9550 it was just a little less than minute for minute. (I am watching DH P2 rip about ten minutes into it and it has dropped to 67.8 Avg FPS and about a total of 60min to finish including elapsed time. still pretty awesome.)

Funny thing is, benchmarks don't show that much of an improvement, but in real world gaming and encoding it sure does. The proof is in the pudding as they say...

Only bummer I have seen so far is the increased power usage. When I OC'ed to 4.4 and was playing a game my 800VA UPS overload alarm went off. Guess I need to get a bigger UPS. For now I am on stock clocks, which is just fine. I will OC, but not in any big hurry since I need a bigger UPS and stock clocks are running everything more than fine. If my UPS had a way to silence the alarm I wouldn't worry about it.

My s775 was using DDR800, OC'ed to 940. I am sure double the memory bandwidth of my current 1866 helps as well.

Heh, well you didn't say anything about eyefinity setups. I guess I should have noticed the two GPUs in the sig.

multiple gpus and insane resolutions is one of the few places were a strong CPU helps. RTs with tons of units is really the only other case where it helps too. One GPU at 1080p...any CPU made in the last five years will probably do the job.

Though I rip blurays on a Q6600 and it takes about 30 minutes longer than my 2600K and the 2600K will take about two hours. Though I am using DVDfab for it. Handbrake would probably benefit more from the extra threads on the 2600K and your 8350. Though DVDFab will put a decent load going on all the threads and give a kiss to the GPU every now and then via DXVA and CUDA, but it never goes about 75% or so. I've seen handbrake take threads to 100%

I guess the 8350 does lend itself to my particular setup and uses really well. Though not all that uncommon these days to have a multi GPU and monitor setup.

Handbrake would push the Q9550 95-100%. It pushes the 8350 maybe 60-70%, though that is not a hard number, just a few cursory glances at Open HWM CPU usage graphs while ripping.

Nah, Handbrake is just quad core optimized so it can work a Quad core harder than a Octa or an i7 with HT. It pushes my old 3570K 95-97%, It pushes this 3770K 70-75%. You still get benefit from More cores or hyperthreading, but the scaling is no where near linear.

For example the Hexcore 3970X is only 20% faster than quad core 3770K when it have 50% more core and threads and runs the same stock clock.

It's dead in that it would not be a great idea to "invest" heavily into a build based on the socket when the replacementis aalmost here, but it is still going to be a good platform until the tech used on it is outdated (ie when the next generation of PCI-E/SATA/USB/etc come about).

It's all relative. I see a P4 3GHz and I see a perfect processor to put into one of the computers that the nonprofit Ive started will rrefurbish, get running, and give to a woman or family at a "battered women's shelter" to provide them with Internet access, email, the ability to write a resume and find a job. I see the older stuff that many here dismiss as worthless as being a means through which I can provide a person the capability to start over, to give them back their life. In fact, I'd say that these things are anything but dead, in fact they have the capability to provide someone with a second chance in life.

For my own personal use, I see the E8600 I have as the ideal basis for a home file server, if only I could find a motherboard. I see some fun via risk-free overclocking perhaps with unusual or experimental cooling techniques.

Pretty much anything Pentium 4, Athlon64, or newer is very much alive in my eyes, and as a result I have started what I feel is an excellent way to reuse these old but capable pieces of technology, giving both them and the person who receives them a new lease on life.

Unless of course it's a first generation Phenom, in which case I do the merciful thing and take it out behind the shed with one of my firearms and put it out of its misery wink.gif (I kid... Kinda)

I consider anything older than what I use on a semi-regular basis to be dead. I still use a computer with an old[er] Pentium 4 1.9GHz from Socket 478 at school once in a while (file recovery machine), and every computer we have in our class have Core 2 Duo E7500's and either 8400GS's or GT 430's, except for one with an NVS 300 (that constantly has bent pins and we solder and microwave to repair it when other things happen). I personally use my first gen Intel i5 760 whenever I can (sAnity? rig in sig), and I plan to use it until Haswell (maybe Broadwell) comes out. Unfortunately, I get tempted by building computers for other people quite often, and seeing their hardware, and wishing I had it. If I do upgrade before Haswell, it will be to Ivy Bridge[-E?], but hopefully that stuff doesn't get to me too much.

If i remember the desktops in my school are either Lenovos with C2D 6600 with a 8400 or C2Q 9400 with a 9400.
I don't consider them dead ... (I use a Pentium E5700 in my fileserver/HTPC anyway)
