[ITW] Ad industry threatens Firefox users with more ads if Mozilla moves on tracking plans - Page 14

Who are they, or anyone for that matter, to tell Mozilla how to design their software?

Ironically enough, moreso than before, you would be forced to pay their workers wages, the only difference being that instead of doing it through customary methods, you would be doing it through mandatory methods.

I think the restaurant still have to pay if they don't meat minimal wage after tips. In most places in the us anyways. Not sure about other countries.

If they want to charge service charge, then so be it. I wouldn't personally eat there, but some others might.

But even SO, that does not give them the right to pay their workers less than minimum wage.

A good business doesn't charge the customers for their employee's wages directly (as in tipping).
They only ask that you pay for whatever service or good you order.

Would you eat there if instead of a service charge, they just raised the price of everything on the menu so that it came out to be the same as if they had? I don't know why you are so completely against the thought of paying for someone's services directly. You're either going to get a cheaper product or service with an extra charge attached, or a more expensive product or service with the labor included in the cost. If I take my car down to a shop for a new part that costs $100 and I get charged $60 for them to install it, and you go to a shop that advertises "Free installation!" and they charge you $160 for the part, we both pay the same thing either way. The only difference is how it is perceived by the consumer. It's the same with restaurants, and any other business.

My friend runs a Android ROM download site. He currently runs at a loss, but has a donate button. However, it's now starting to get more popular and he's going to start a premium feature which will make him a little bit of money and keep the site going. He just enjoys running the site.

So, he has the potential to make money, but first and foremost, he just enjoys running the site. He wishes only to break even and he sells a product in the end. That's a respectable way to run a website.

Decrying ANYONE for blocking ads is contemptible. We are advertised to in every walk of life and the ONE aspect of it that you get to choose on should remain free of vilification.

If a website like OCN wants to make money, I would rather have premium accounts, and products/merchandise to purchase rather than being snarled at for blocking their ads. I don't care about any of the ads on the website (I don't want to be an ad impression, I don't want third aprty cookies tracking my behaviour and posts on here or anywhere. I will not become a product)... but case stickers, t-shirts, branded items I would happily purchase. OCN has this but they're quite rare.

Choice. Respect your users/customers and offer more than one way to make money if need be. It's not our job to pay these peoples bills. If they can't take it, they can leave. And its great for a site like OCN. As a user like the one above, can block the ads, and not be tracked, yet still support the site cause OCN is smart enough to not rely 100% on ad revenue. They also respect their users by not using aggressive ads. I allow OCN ads and rarely take notice of them. (Good job OCN thumb.gif )

Good sites with smart people running it will do fine.

I pay for my internet connection, if an ad agency wants to subsidize it by forcing me to watch ads, they can send me a PM. Otherwise, be smart, don't piss me off and use sensible ads that don't ruin the experience of the site I'm on, and perhaps you won't force me to block those pesky ads. Then you can make your money and stop crying like a baby.

Not that i like advertisement or anything but blocking all ads will be bad.... So some sites might have other means of funding their websites but alot do rely on ad views and stuff.

What do you guys think about TV ads? You pay for cable don't you?

This is just like TV nobody likes TV ads but if all TV ads would be banned all your favorite programs will be gone.

EDIT:
And for the people saying Overclock.net doesnt rely on ads that might be true today but i bet somewhere in its history it relied on ad views.

There is nothing that entitles you to web surfing free of ads. It's not a right but you can do so if you want. If you were entitled to browse the web ad-less you'd also be entitled to any electronic equipment that enables you to browse the web. None of these things are a right.

At the same time, advertisers do not have the right to constantly bombard us with ads. This is the problem; some site owners clearly believe they have some kind of guaranteed right to show us ads and are whining about it. Nobody guaranteed them revenue based on ads, and no agreement was entered into based on that business model. If you don't like the fact that I browse your site without seeing ads, sue me. See how far you get.

As for third party tracking cookies, mine get deleted every time I close my browser. If you want market research, you're going to pay me for it.

This. OCN mods don't get paid. So far as we know there is only one beneficiary. Besides us of course.

If i've heard wrong and OCN mods do get paid then i'm sure there is some sort or Social interaction that landed them the job that makes it feel a bit unfair. But that is another discussion.

I read gizmodo daily and only look at half the pages. Should i pay for all of their writers. No. Same on Tomshardware. I think they fired the guy but there was a guy who kept writing rants and posted and bumped them on the news. I don't want to pay him for being annoying and having trouble with toshiba. I already know toshiba sucks. I don't need that from a tech site.
