[ITW] Ad industry threatens Firefox users with more ads if Mozilla moves on tracking plans - Page 3

I wouldn't say nobody cares about advertising in general. But ads on the internet, I could agree there. I'd say 90% of ad clicks are by mistake.

I can't recall myself ever clicking an ad. Although I have been running adblock plus for years now.

ROFL I like how these organizations basically threaten users with their own products. Lmao

Want to show me ads which I honestly don't care about?
Sure, go ahead. I'll just use even more ad blockers and script blockers.

The modern world is so full of advertising, you cant go anywhere without being bombarded by crap...

Those sites need that revenue to even exist. Not being able to tailor those ads will harm those sites. Having fuffly bunny fun time game pop up on a tech site, while inherently funny, will not generate the ctr that is needed to sustain small independent sites. This change would mean having to go through, if even remotely feasible for a small site, and tailor packages to the users of the site. I am going to guess from the responses on the site lately, that most people here have no clue what that would even entail. So yes, the ad agency is trying to protect their revenue stream, but this also effects the owners of small time sites that rely on this targeted advertising to keep the site going.

Again this is another example of how OCN members can not see outside the scope of their small faction. Again to reiterate, you are the minority, users do click through those ads and they generate revenue for the site.
It's not that we can't see beyond ourselves, it's simply not most of our issue. Should I sympathize with you or any other business person because your business model suffers by giving users free choice? Sorry, not gonna happen.

Whining advertising companies make me laugh (not referring to you specifically). When exactly were they guaranteed a right to slap ads in our faces whenever they feel like it? The problem is, when is enough enough? When a site is crippled by loading ads because they just can't stop themselves, people will never go to that site again.

I block ads every way I can. I don't care if it bites into your revenue, because it's not my business model. Do you hear me whining to ad companies about paying my mortgage? They don't care about how my bills get paid, and I don't care how theirs get paid.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I have an overclocked account for this site, so I do support it, just not through ads.

Using Adblock hurts the sites you browse, you use their bandwidth but give nothing in return, the truth is you don't even need to click on ads, a lot of them give revenue to the site simply by being loaded. I also often click on ads on my most visited websites to give then some support.

Now Youtube ads have become terrible, one ad at the start and one at the end of the video, which is especially anoying if you're watching a playlist in your couch/bed and need to get up to skip them, especially when some ads double or triple the sound volume.

I run a web site. Not only personal (which means I pay 100% of the costs out of pocket) but also for my company. Our company web site there is there to support and educate out customers, NOT to try to sell them anything other than our own products. Yes, we COULD add tracking cookies to see what they are clicking on, but we made the choice not to piss them off with cookies. The cost we pay for our web site is just one in a long series of costs of doing business. We don't have to sell advertising space to justify its existence.

So do me a favor and don't speak for all businesses and how cookies are important to a business. They are important for ADVERTISING businesses and maybe companies that have a massive diversity of programs, but they are NOT needed for many companies or personal web sites, and they CERTAINLY shouldn't be used without PERMISSION of the person browsing.

By charging people like me for an Overclocked account? By charging people like Lutro0 to advertise his threads? By charging people like xxxx for a "Sponsored Build"? Etc, etc, etc.

Yes, OCN most likely gets a chunk of money from "click throughs", but seriously, given the tech level of people here, are you really going to sit there and say that without cookies and click throughs OCN would fail?

That is laughable. I dare say that 99% of the OCN users have some form of adblock up, thus making that type of "advertising" useless ... and here we are, still on OCN and it's still up.

Actually everyone with an overclocked account, which you can either pay for or you get after a year and 250 rep, has the option to turn off ads on OCN.

Yup, OCN has Google Analytics, Quantcast, ScoreCard Research Beacon, and VigLink ... all of which are blocked for me. wink.gif

That's what I have for OCN.
I might get an overclocked account now somebody mentioned it above, I want the custom title tongue.gif
Do we even need yahooapis for OCN to work or can I disable it
