Very simple buy it from Microcenter.

The price will drop quickly and they offer combo deals with mobo's.

I paid top $ for my 3770K at the time from Newegg because MC was sold out for a while but i will never make that mistake again.

I saw this coming a mile away but then again I've had some chats with our Intel reps at work. I don't understand their mindset in the price premium but like people have said, they are still clinging to 920's that games still can't tax, let alone a bazillion 2500, 2600, & 3770K's out there. The only people that are going to buy are those who are making the jump from AMD or those who usually jump on new merchandise anyway regardless of minimal performance jumps.

Eh, prices will settle, not really that big of a deal. Nothing I do really taxes my CPU anyhow and I doubt I would gain more than 1-2 fps upgrading to 4770k. Totally pointless for me/most.

My next upgrade will probably be a completely new system build. I'm thinking Ill skip 2 generations of GPUs and at least another gen of CPU. I'll give time for the next gen console ports to really pick up.

how come you have 3770k for 227usd in microcenter? is that cause you dont pay sales tax when purchasing online? i mean here its like 305eur including vat/sales tax

dont see going new platform that soon. my q9550@3.4ghz is still enough for my 660ftw 3gb even @1440 (40-50+ average fps on ultra/very high)

best

Yeah, but the thing is that Intel is now at the point where I personally (and possibly many others) will find those prices outrageous. The cheapest, non-unlocked, chip is nearly $200? We're officially at the point where if I had to upgrade (and buy something BNIB), I'd just settle with with AMD has to offer. It's not like software is pushing our hardware at all. I still don't feel a need to upgrade from my Lynnfield. I spend most of my time playing games like CS:GO and Starcraft 2. They aren't anywhere near demanding enough that it's necessary for me to drop $370 to get an i7. I bought my Xeon because the price was right at $230 for a chip with hyperthreading. It was probably a bit more powerful than I needed, but the price wasn't obnoxious so I went for it. If the Intel chip with hyperthreading had been an obnoxious $300+, I would have gone with an AMD option for sure.

My next build may just be something like a small LAN PC powered by an AMD A-series APU. It's cheap and it's powerful enough.

May be worth it for an ultrabook, not a smart buy for the desktop.

It is getting higher, but isn't the vrm supposed to be on the die now? I was thinking i heard that here while back. Might be wrong tho. If it is that is probably why it might be higher. Jut my thoughts

I never quite understood how they can fit a VRM inside the CPU.

Actually, it's the exact opposite of what you think. Microcenter sells the 3770K at that price in their physical stores only, and thus do charge additional sales tax where applicable. They're using it as a "loss-leader, hoping that getting more customers to go to their store will lead to repeat customers who will buy other, more profitable items from them in the future.

The precise reason that they don't offer that price online is because internet shoppers show much less willingness to be "loyal" to a given store and merely look for the best price regardless of who sells an item. As such, such a great "loss-leader" promotion like the 3770K for $227 would lead to just a "loss".
