[Gizmag] Graphene aerogel takes world’s lightest material crown

Created by a research team from China’s Zhejiang University in the Department of Polymer Science and Engineering lab headed by Professor Gao Chao, the ultra-light aerogel has a density lower than that of helium and just twice that of hydrogen.

Anyone know if it possible to make a solid that is less dense than air? Nitrogen and oxygen both have more elemental mass than carbon especially because they are diatomic.

My medium level physics knowledge tells me that it's not possible, however physics is weird and even if it doesn't make sense it can often still happen.

Aerogels should be less dense than air...or at least can be.

Found a good link My guess that was the last crown holder for the lightest material.

Well air is rather dense. If you take a cubic cm of air there will be lots of material in that cubic cm. So a solid with a structure that has a lot of empty space in it will be less dense. You can only observe it in a vacuum because air would fill up the empty space and make the solid more dense than air in practice out side of a controlled lab. You'd have the density of the object and the air at the same time.

Cool tech though. Still waiting on seeing some commercial implementations of this kind of stuff. Aerogel is amazing, but its basically non-existent on the commercial market.

Surely it depends on the pressure and temperature of the air? If you gather air from sea level it will be way denser than if you gathered it at 50,000 ft up.
Also, the 'type' of air, the quantity of elements that air contains can vary greatly.
