Emergency mobo help!! Failed BIOS flash. Asus Striker Extreme

Well I really got screwed over by Asus. This is the first time I have ever had a major issue with their products.

It really does seem frustrating that with this being such a common issue that Asus still has not removed the version 2002 BIOS from the support page.

Anyways, enough of my ranting about that... So here is what happened:

I needed to update the BIOS to fix a few things involving the tweaker and GPU compatibility. I downloaded 2002.bin from the website and placed the file on a FAT32 flash drive. I booted into BIOS and initiated the EZ Flash 2 utility and navigated to the BIOS file on the root of the flash drive... It checked the file and verified that it was the correct file and then erased the BIOS block on the chip... It wrote the new BIOS to the chip and after it verified it said that the write was successful and the computer rebooted...

Unfortunately, that BIOS flash was far from successful. It totally bricked the BIOS chip and I cannot elicit a response from the board... I would try and provide more info if the LCD error code display actually worked (which it never worked as long as I have owned the board...

I contacted Asus and they do have BIOS chips with the latest BIOS online for $15 (which is fair considering shady eBay sellers only charge a little less). OR I could send the board in and have a hefty $120 repair fee... No thank you....

Ultimately I may have to get a new BIOS chip but I was just curious if there were any other way to resurrect the current one other than possibly placing it in a different board and flash it in DOS? while in theory it could work, I am really concerned about what could go wrong. (BIOS chips on a board can be changed while the system is in an OS.)

Any thoughts?

Note: I do not have the recovery CD for this board as I received it secondhand.

does that have the BIOS flashback feature?
If it DOES Format a USB drive to FAT32 and Copy an older version(Before 2002) of the BIOS to the drive.
then plug the drive into the ROG Connect port and hold the Clr CMOS Button on the back, until the light blinks.

i had to do this with my ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z.

If it doesnt have BIOS Flashback, you will have to buy the replacement chip.

Sorry for the DBL Post.

Some guy on Toms Hardware Said:
"
Reset your cmos. Read your manual if you dont know how to reset it and make sure before you do it unplug your power cable from PSU. One more thing i have the same board just press the clear CMOS switch and hold it for a minute. "

There's a good reason those BIOS chips are still socketed after all these years.

I'm assuming you pulled the battery and/or did the Clear CMOS procedure already. Different BIOS version sometimes have different binary settings profiles, and the old data might be incompatible with the new BIOS version. Wipe the CMOS and see if helps.

If that doesn't do it, get a replacement from ASUS.

This board is quite a bit more primitive than the Crosshair series, I know nothing of a ROG connect port on this board, it does have the CLR button but it is located next to the power button connections and the like. I am going to see if i can find something related to BIOS flashback, but I am doubtful it has it. I heard wind of the recovery CD that shipped with the board did flashback for you but I do not have it so that does me no good (unless I can scrounge up an ISO for it)

Edit: Just to show how old this board is, it has the old cube style ROG logo.

Well Greg, I did try several ways of clearing CMOS and I cannot say it has helped... I am going to try and leave the jumper on clear and the switch depressed with the battery out for a while... This may or may not help...

As far as getting a new chip from Asus, their deal is a joke... Its $15 and im pretty sure they will charge for shipping and there is no return/refund on any chip. I found a seller on eBay called biosdepot and has been selling chips since 1999. they charge $11.82 and do free first class shipping. Anybody dealt with them before? The only reason they piqued my interest is the ability for a return/refund within 30 days of receiving it... Which is so much more promising than the way Asus wants to run things.

Ok so digging through my box of retired parts i found an MSI K7T Pro2 Ver. 1... This is an AMD socket A board that runs on AWARD like my striker. Now considering that the boards have opposite brands would it even be viable to hotflash from this ancient board (it has the same BIOS socket, and runs a 1998 version of AWARD)... I know a hotflash would likely work on another intel board but I do not have one that works...

Thoughts? The MSI board is completely expendable, I bought it at a thrift shop years back and it has never been installed into any of my projects...

I also have a GT4026e Gateway machine that is socket 775 so it may be ideal for the flash.... this and every other Socket 775 computer i have in my house has a soldered chip...

There's another option that's just as cheap, and maybe more flexible for you:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-SPI-BIOS-25X-Series-EN25T80-Programmer-AMIC-ATMEL-WINBOND-ST-MXIC-adapter-/160954042836?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item25799bc9d4

Will let you reprogram your BIOS chip yourself, outside of the motherboard.

Greg

While this is a very good idea (+rep for looking).. This board uses a 32 pin BIOS chip.. it appears that this can only do 8 and 16 pin removable and 8 pin soldered... Therefore I cannot use this particular module...

By the way, I finally got tired of thinking of a way to fix the current chip that I have.. I just purchased one on eBay and it should be here by the end of the week.

I bought from that ebay shop. I had no problem with them. Just email them before hand to let them know which bios you want. Also if your bios had any thing special loaded in the bios it won't load them. For example when I used it on My Gene-Z I lost all the software keys for various programs. Also my Intel lan was messed up until I reflashed it with the intel utility.
