High Temps 7870 MYST

Thread Starter
Today my 7870 MYST arrived and I was pretty damn happy. So after a bit of fiddling around I ended up re-installing windows and all my games. I downloaded MSI afterburner as a monitoring/OC tool and started up a game. I quickly noticed that the voltage would ramp up to 1.26V on stock clocks, even though the supposed default is 1.188v. So after forcing constant voltage it stayed. But even at 1.188V, on stock clocks @ 100% fan, the temps get up to 87C on Far Cry 3. This isn't even my most demanding game. and 87C is far from the "Low-70's" they advertised on the reviews. Did I get a lemon? I also have a very well ventilated case with a side fan, 2 rear fans and a front fan blowing cool air in and hot air out

The Powercolor 7870 MYST are well know to have high temperature due to poor TIM application or just poor TIM quality. Remove the cooler, clean the old thermal paste and replace it with a good one.

Then report back.

Or just send it back. You shouldn't have to fix the manufacture's mistake.

I think i will just RMA it. I dont trust myself with putting it on and possibly voiding the warranty.

Nevermind lol, i just had my fans way out of wack. All of them were pulling air inin a sense recirculating the hot air. Man i feel stupid. Load temps are about 72C now

This. I replaced the TIM on my 7950 and I went from 68 degrees at stock clocks to around 59 degrees celcius. And instead of basically going higher in temps extremely quickly with the old TIM, it slowly goes up. Overclocked is even better, at 1.275V I get a max of 88 degrees with the old TIM, with the new TIM I get 75 degrees..

I'm an old school gamer and uncomfortable with high temps. However, my 20 year old geek gamer son told me I'm stuck in the Pentium 4 days. He told me that temps as high as the mid 80s are acceptable and normal for these new 28mm GPUs. I've done some research and one person said he has ran his GPU at 90C for 24 hours without a problem. I wouldn't worry about temps in the mid 70s to low 80s because I believe my son and some research supports it.
By the way, my son did change the stock thermal grease on the cards and that may have helped my crossfireX 7870 Mysts stay relatively cool, if you consider 75C cool.
