What to do with this Asus G73JH Laptop...

Thread Starter
So, my friend's laptop took a dive onto the floor three or four times (his dog/niece/nephew tripping over power cord, so he says). After its final dive, the LCD screen shattered and he said it wouldn't boot anymore. He knows I work in IT, so he said I could have it. After opening it up, first thing I notice is that the USB port on the LAN module was mangled. I removed the mangled part, and voila... the laptop boots now. I suspect the mangled USB port was shorting the laptop. Also, I noticed a lot of missing screws. Me thinks he opened this thing up at one point before giving it to me.

Anyway, I'm hesitant to sink any money into this thing: $10 for USB/LAN module, $30 for replacement bottom case, $25 for replacement hinges/LCD bezel, and $65-$80 for new LCD screen. The primary reason is that I can't get it to work with an external display. I know Apple laptops inside and out, but I don't know all that much about PC laptops. Should this laptop show POST info on an external display at boot, or will external display require a display driver that isn't installed?

As long as VGA/HDMI or DP port is working. Sounds like though there may be even more issues if it wont post..
Windows has backup safe mode video drivers pre-installed at every windows install. Those should kick in.

The G73jh is a pretty good laptop, been playing Bioshock Infinite on one with OK settings. Only the... Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

...has really cut into FPS at 1600x900 and custom settings. GPU isn't so great for 1080p. Definitely worth putting in the money for what you'll get.
