New headphones/soundcard $350 budget

Thread Starter
i'm somewhat of a novice when it comes to sound quality, but i have been reading through the forums for a wile and thought it was time to make an upgrade from my on board audio and my crappy gaming headset.

>My budget caps out at $400 as i will also need to purchase a mic, currently looking at one for $80. But the highest i can go on headphones and sound card is $400, pref staying at or below $350

>The music i listen to mainly is trance and other electronic music, although i do enjoy vocals. Listening to music will be my main focus but i will also be doing some gaming.

>In the past i have owned a pair of tritton's, and astro a40's.

>Mostly i will be using the headset wile i'm at my desktop computer.

>I live in southern California.

I would prefer semi open but it makes little difference to me, i need to be able to ware them for extended periods of time 7+hours and not have a headache.

System specs- Asus p6t motherboard, i7 950, gtx 670, 8g of ram, windows 8.

Hello,
If you spent a lot of time on forums you should already be aware that your budget will not get you high-end sound card + headset/mic.
So consider what is the most important part for you.
Do you play games ?
I think from an onboard chip every soundcard, even a entry market one will be a huge improvement and you can put a little more on a very good headset. Get a creative audiogy or asus xonar and a sennheiser pc 360. Southern california gets realy hot right ? that's why you want your ears to breathe : this one should be alright .there are other headset of the same brand that should suite your needs if you'd like the microphone no to be integrated in the headset.
If you go for a real good sound then do not expect to be able to get a real good headset.
At last if you play games then you should have a look at quality USB headsets, they have their own integrated soundcard and software and therefore do not require a soundcard purchase.

cheers

read this like everyone does and it will answer all your questions...

I got the Audio Technica ATH-AD700 and Creative Soundblaster Z (model SB1500) with an included mic and works wonders.. If you really need a better mic check out mod mics...

High quality Headphones require seperate AMP and that costs$$$$ so you have to either raise your budget or go similar to my route.

If he goes with the Z or Zx like yourself he won't have to get a separate headphone amp, he'll get a microphone and still have around $200-$250 to spend on some nice headphones/headset

Do you want open or closed headphones?

If you dont mind open then how about something like a Sennheiser HD 518/558/598 depens on how much you want to spend on the headphones

Dont buy a headset buy a pair of real headphones

Dont know how much the Soundblaster Z it but i would go for something like that

I just recently got a Titanium HD (just upgraded the op amps for $4 bucks), Bravo V1 (modded) and DT 770 for $356 so your budget is definitely doable.

I probably shouldn't have mentioned the mic and price as it seems confusing now. but i have a budget of 400 for headset/ sound card/ possible amp. I have another $100 to spend on a mic, someone had recommended me the Samson Meteor Mic USB Studio Microphone (Cardioid) which is $70 on amazon right now. I have no preference as to open or closed headset, but i know some of the closed can get hot with extended use and i would like to avoid that as i will be wearing them for multiple hours at a time.

And you enjoy vocals closed is not for you then

Have you tried looking at the Sennheiser HD 518/558/598 headphones

I have a pair of HD 598 and i use mine every single day and have done so for more then 2 years and they still sound like new

Poor choice if electronica is his concern. The DT990s are a good choice for him at 180 probably for the headphones, 110 for the Zx and 70 for the mic. Even cheaper than he thought or budgeted for.

Thank you for the recommendation, i will most likely go with this setup, but on the DT990's are you referring to the 250ohm? Also i am somewhat confused on the soundblaster z and zx, if i'm going to get the zx is the built in mic quality good enough to constitute not buying a separate mic?
