Agreed.

I would even take it one step further and say that the schiit magni and modi would also be good for this situation.

The mic certainly can go cheaper though to soften the blow.

I was even wondering how smart it would be to simply go with the audio technica M50s for now (100 bucks), and then later on down the road get something like the HE-400s.

.........like the schiit magni and modi? Technically they are just an external sound card. The Objective O2 dac and amp are also decent, but probably not doable at his price point. Another option would be the audio engine D1 dac/amp.

A used asus essence STX wouldn't be a bad choice either.

Not trying to say your wrong, I stick to what I know. And you definitly seem to know a lot more than I do on audio devices so pardon me if it looked like I wanted to shut off your argument on the Z, not what I intended.
Anyways I read on the Asus site concerning their sound cards that they had orientation wheither it was designed for games or music or movies.
Options like dolby, eax etc ...
I have a soundblaster Z and apart for an equilizer with some useless modes like "under water" or "cavern" there's not much to tweek how music sounds with... That's why I wouldn't have recomended the Z but maybe Zx is better .

Wait was that directed at me? Or someone else?

If it was me, I certainly wasn't taking any offense to your comment. I was a bit confused simply because I already had suggested more music oriented solutions. Some other people did so as well.

If it was someone else, I would stress that you try to use the quote button. That way we will know who you are responding to.

FYI, the people on the audio forums have rather thick skin. No need to worry about offending people here biggrin.gif . Welcome to the site by the way thumb.gif

In response to your post, I agree.

The creative sound cards should not even be on this thread with the exception of the titanium HD and the ZXr (the band new audiophile card).

They are actually not bad for music considering that the card was intended for gaming, but that does not mean that it is a good card for the OP like you said.

As for the asus sound cards...........ehhhh. I would say that what they said isn't wrong, but it is far from correct. In reality there seems to be 3 levels of asus sound products. Level 1 is sort of a general sound card. You could use it for what ever you like. This level would include the asus xonar DG through the D1. Then you have level 2 which is gaming type of stuff. For the moment this is just the phoebus sound card which is a piece of junk anyways, so there is no need to worry about it. Then you have the audiophile level which includes the essence st/stx. TECHNICALLY speaking you still have yet another level for their amps and dac, but they are SEVERELY overpriced and all of it is crap too.

But the issue is that they can all be used for pretty much any application. The only real difference is that the more you pay, the better quality parts it has, but that is about the extent of it.

Your argument against the creative sound card is a bit off. Technically those landscape modes are for sound in music. The idea is that if you want your music to sound like it is underwater, you can.

The software is utterly terrible. The only reason you should use it is to just kill time.

The only thing you really need for ANY audio card is MAYBE a decent equalizer. Even those I don't really enjoy playing around with too much.

The real reason why the creative Z/ZX would not work here is simply because the card uses lower quality parts than say an asus essence STX or other wise.

Lastly, one more thing I would like to point out to everyone is that the OP has a large enough budget for an amp and dac. It might not be the best amp and dac, but it would be better than any sound card.

I'm glad you posted this before i decided to go with the Z or Zx. In regards to your earlier post, the only problem i have with the audio technica M50s is that they are fully closed and would prefer something i can wear all day and not get to hot.

Thanks for all the feedback.

I agree with the above statements.. I am an avid gamer so the Z works fine for me.. I have to say the the ATH-AD700 are my first open back phones and boy is it nice... Since you are more oriented towards music I would get the open back for a wider sound stage and lite on the noggin...

The guys here are geeks when it come to this stuff.. When i'm looking for new gear Overclock.net here i come!

so it seems that these might be your best to go on.

hmmmmmmm then you are sort of out of luck because even the DT990s still get toasty. Heck, I use the Q701s which is basically a headphone cup with a driver in it and as many holes as possible to let air in, and I still get hot in them.

At this point the DT990s are your best bet, so you might want to try and take breaks.
