>$350 Gamer Budget Build

Thread Starter
Good evening all,

I'm in the current process of selling my baby... my first rig, to down-grade to a budget gamers build and would like some opinions on what can be done to optimize the budget. I have an extra case laying around as well as an extra HDD so that won't be necessary in the build. Please feel free to critique it and add/remove items to the wishlist. Thanks for helping me out!biggrin.gif

Question: I've been very curious about the APU processors; can the A10-5800k or A8-5600k outperform the CPU/GPU combination I have listed? It seems logical that the APU would be the clear victory but I have read that since the GPU is imbedded onto the CPU they share memory and it may not be optimal for gaming. Thoughts?

Actual Pricing Differs. The Cost of the following components are:

Total: $290

PSU: $35 w/ MIR
RAM: $50 w/ Promo
GPU: $40 w/ MIR
CPU: $60 w/ Promo

Games to Consider:

-Left for Dead 2
-League of Legends
-COD MW3
-Guild Wars 2
-GTA4

I am a mediocre gamer and like to visually see my games running nicely, etc. (medium-high settings). Is this possible with the current build?

PS. - I plan on doing some moderate overclocking! post-flame-small.gif

mhm that is a good chalenge.

What monitor are you "mediocrely" gaming on ?
I know that L4D, LoL and MW3 are not demanding too much.

Now APU seems to be a good choise but in fact they're not. While the graphics part is the best integrated graphics on the market, the cpu architecture is realy a drawback, specialy when it comes to gaming.
Get an i3 3220 + a AMD 7770 that's 200 $ . You have the case and disc so 50$ ram + 50$ mobo + 50$ psu that's 350 .
You want budget alright but you will regret spending your money on mediacenter parts if you whant to play games. Every $ is important in a short budget like yours thats why you'd better go for the entire 350 than save 50 over an apu and then regret it.

Thanks for the help kami,

I have currently 2 Acer 23.5" LCD monitors which I was playing my games @ 1080p. In regards to the i3 3220, I am what you call a fanboy for AMD, I believe they have a chip that can outperform this thing for a cheaper price, I have heard of people raving the Athlon I posted or something similar to it for a more "budget" friendly CPU (the i3 3220 costs $129 @ Newegg:mad:) So hopefully we can pair a higher end GPU as you proposed with a more budget, yet still capable CPU?

Kami, please don't take this as me bashing your post, thank you, I just like to play Devil's Advocate and am trying to see if I can squeeze any other choices out:thumb:

Get used Phenom II x4 965/955 (in my country it cost 100$ new) + used gigabyte 770 chipset board (You can get 8phase VRM + high HTT ) 60$+ used HD6850. The amount of ram depends on the system and other stuff.

May I ask why your downgrading? I could imagine you getting much more than $400-$500 for your current build...

Just hold on to your current build if you can. It'll be able to run games smoothly for years to come, whereas this new build you're proposing would be outdated insanely fast. Ultimately you'd save more money by just keeping what you have. If your financial situation is that dire, then just sell your rig, buy a cheap laptop and stop gaming.

And i'm not saying i don't like AMD . When the first APU came out that's what I would recomend to my friends because it had such potential.... And I'm so sorry I was wrong, well partially wrong. The thing is they're not up to the expectation when it comes to gaming. But I suppose that with a resonable overclock and given the games you play you shouldn't be cpu limited with an amd cpu (see i'm not your ennemy !) it's good your concidering a separate gfx card though, even the cheapest one outperform igp's

Pawelr98 is right, those components will do good. It's just wouldn't be very comfortable buying used parts ... maybe you could find good deals over the web.

(ps: no offence ever taken ;-) )

Let's hope so! Currently facing some financial hardship and have the rig up for sale to try and cover my ass a bit (no, it's not essential I sell my rig but I honestly think I can downgrade from it without feeling handicapped). When I first bought the components, it was the first computer I ever assembled and I was hasty to choose components that were a bit overkill. An OC'd Phenom II x4 950+ [like Pawler suggested] will handle a game just as smoothly as an FX-8120, which is really more for Server/Video-Editing application or highly multi-core/mutli-threaded programs which gaming really isn't, unless you play BF3, Skyrim, etc., the games I don't play.). Although I don't find any lag while playing (under the right settings) I understand this chip is not optimal for gaming and is a bit pricier than let's say another chip which will perform on par while costing nearly 1/2 the price.

Basically, my computer is a bit overkill for MY NEEDS so I believe I can flip this machine and construct myself a more budget friendly build (that I can run all my games I'd like to play on!)

I understand what you're saying, trust me, it was something I lost sleep over (considering to sell Sheldon...) this is my heart and soul. This is the first computer I assembled and the computer that has pushed me to keep learning about everything from trouble-shooting, to learning how to Overclock; it's definitely a part of me which I have taken serious consideration and have decided I want to sell him.

I have an older HP laptop which I can hold off until I find the right budget build a s well; I can't fathom being without a computer for over 6hrs...wink.gif

Hahaha, glad to hear your not easily offended! And yeah, I remember first reading about the APUs as they were coming out and thought to myself is this a possible GPU killer?!? After reading a couple of review it seems it just doesn't have the balls to run everything lol. Anyways, I think I'll keep doing my research, incase you guys were curious about the posting I have for sale, it's here. (The price-tag is a bit optimistic IMO, lmk what you guys would sell it for! I'm curious)
