[Anand] AMD Comments on GPU Stuttering, Offers Driver Roadmap & Perspective on Benchmarking

For as long as I can remember talking about video cards and GPU performance at AnandTech, there has been debate over the type of benchmarks used to represent that performance. In the old days, the debate was mostly manufacturer driven. Curiously enough, the discourse usually fired up when one manufacturer was at a significant deficit in GPU performance. NVIDIA made a big deal about moving away from timedemos and average frame rates during the early GeForce FX (NV30) days, when its cards might have delivered a decent gaming experience but were slaughtered in most benchmarks. Even Intel advocated for a shift away from most CPU bound gaming benchmarks back during the early years of the Pentium 4 - again, for obvious reasons.

Reading, seems to be an extremely good read so far (on page 5 at the time of posting). Is anyone else thinking that GPUview could also be used to see CPU bottlenecks? Might be an awesome tool to show if say a 8350 is bottlenecking some GPU in certain apps.

And props to TR for revealing AMD's stuttering, good for all consumers.

Decent read. July this year for issues to be resolved (as best as possible). They are not rushing themselves.

So as far as single GPU stuttering goes DX9 should be fixed, DX10 is in the process and DX11 should come at some point. On top of that some individual titles have been fixed. So lots of improvements already and much more coming.

As far as multi GPU stuttering goes:

That resolution will come in or around a July driver drop, at which point AMD will introduce some new driver options to control how their cards deal with the issue. In the meantime however micro-stuttering and how AMD’s multi-GPU technology compares to NVIIDA’s multi-GPU technology is likely to become a bigger issue before AMD can push out their new driver. So AMD may be spending the next couple of months on the defensive.

Even Anand is backing PCper in their findings (link found in the anand article). The issues are very much real and those very short frames that people have been talking about lately are a thing that should be noted.

Also does anyone think that this new choice they will be offering to the user:

Might mean that the mode where MS is reduced could result in less raw fps. At least to me it sounds like they're definitely offering users a compromise here. At the very least it sounds like a choice between more input lag and more stuttering. However I do remember at some point reading that NV cards might have a tiny bit more input lag, can't remember where I saw that.

Will be interesting to see the results in any case though.

Very, very good read,

It is also good to see AMD being so humble and open about their issue, explaining the REAL reasons why it was happening instead of dodging questions.

Marketing and PR department layoffs last year seem to have paid off, the new dudes (or the remaining ones) are far more competent than the old ones!

If Windows is a major problem with stuttering, then why can't they develop a user-switchable "gaming mode" to make the OS prioritize the resources of the OS in favor of the games and their rendering processes?

To be fair, I think it is blown out of proportion. Frame latencies became a major issue when there was little to no difference in performance between amd and nvidia.

However seeing how smooth Crysis 3 is with multi gpu, if this is the result of their work, I say more please. It really runs like butter.

I was never unhappy with multi-gpu performance (FAR CRY 3 being the exception) but improvements are never a bad thing.

Pure fps numbers are good for figuring out the overall performance of a GPU but if you want to go into detail about how the final user experience will actually be then you're going to need frame times. So when NV and AMD are closely matched it's obvious that that's going to be when frame times are brought up. They're needed to properly compare products that are closely matched.
