I don't think it was blown out of proportion at all.

First game I loaded up on my 7970 was Skyrim. This was after having several hundred hours on the 670 with it.

Stepping out of a house in Riverwood and looking around, major frame skips with 12.11 beta. I ended up reinstalling windows 7 because I figured something with the previously installed Nvidia driver was cauing the issue. Nope.

I managed to get it settled down using radeonpro but it was nowhere near smooth. I commented on my findings here on OCN and as per usual, I got the answer that AMD wasn't the issue. It was the game itself. The game is broke blah blah blah.

So then here comes 13.2 beta with the stuttering fix. Poof, now it's nice and smooth 95% of the time. The other 5% I attribute to the game itself.

Kudos to AMD for stepping up and fixing it.

very good article. finished reading it. salient points

1. Both AMD and Nvidia agree that FRAPS is not sufficient . better tools are required.
2. AMD acknowledge that they did not do competitive frametime analysis as they did not know that it was the problem. But once it was pointed out they have started to resolve issues as quickly as possible. Also Nvidia were more knowledgeable in this area.
3. Both companies going forward will focus on frametimes.

The tech press needs to come up with better tools in collaboration with Microsoft, Nvidia and AMD. All of this is good for gamers.

It's questionably important, some people can notice it, some people can't and it's differing amounts as to how noticeable it really is, but it should definitely be reported on and the numbers should be shown.
What I'd like to see is videos comparing two separate systems with only one differing aspect (eg. i5 3570k vs FX-8320/8350, GeForce vs Radeon, slow RAM vs fast RAM) so you can actually see the differences between parts for yourself rather than trying to work it out from other data.

This is really good article. Hats off to AnandTech thumbsupsmiley.png Everyone on OCN arguing about performance should be made to read this. While not providing any major revelations for me its a good summary of the whole subject of lag. I also found the part about how and from where Fraps gets its information to be really interesting.

While on the subject of where Fraps gets its info. When I was running my two 4890's and radeoPro I actually found out that adjusting the FlipQueue could considerably help improve responsiveness of some games, particular console ports.

Anyone know of a way to adjust the Flip Queue on Nvidia cards?

It's called "Maximum pre-rendered frames" and it does not apply to multi-GPU.
