Power Supply Faulty ?

Thread Starter
Not sure if this is a right spot to post this , however 3 months ago i sent my old 650w blue Neo power psu to warranty, and i got it replaced with a corsair HX650 w power supply , the power supply seems fine no faults unless im using it in my computer , ive tested it on two computers besides mine , and warranty have tested it also with no errors ,however as soon as its placed in my computer power last in till 2-3 minutes i get just past the login screen most the time , but my computer works fine when i use a standard 400w psu , last 13 Hours + with it ,it does not crash just suddenly shutdown like someones pulled the plug or flicked the switch at the back ., im 99 % sure the cables are all fine but i know its got to be something since its the same way i thought it was and what warranty also said , and ive basically tried every other possibility there's is.

my current build ATM is

Graphics Card : Evaga 550 ti
Mother Bored : Asus p7p55d-e
Cpu : Intel I5 750
ram : 16Gb Corsair 1866mhs
cooling :Corsair H60
case :antec 900 v2 gaming case

cpu runs below 40 degrees, normally idles around 30-35 degrees on factory defaults and graphics cards at 55 ish,

anything that it could possibly be that could help would be appreciated , if you want more information just ask ,by the way hope my spelling and punctuation isnt that bad, been at uni 6 hours today and been playing around with my pc the rest of the day so kinda tired .

thank you .

nope
i think i found the problem,it had to do with the bios didn't narrow it down the settings but started working after i changed basiclly all the settings , not sure why it only effected this psu and not the others ive used but so far its been running 1 and a half hours good, going to run my pc for about 20 hours straight to make sure maby even stress test a bit , found it weird but how it only affected one psu out of the three psu i have used on my system , well im hoping it does not play up again ive really had enough of psu issues.

thanks for replying

btw the instant shutdown didn't happen with the neo antec 650 or a standed 400 watt psu , only when i used the corsair 650w psu im guess was just a voltage issue ,

2 hours in it shutdown , then last around 10 minutes intervals now before shuts off, anyone know if the fans ment to spin on this model im leaning towards that the psu fans arnt working and causing it to overheat and im guessing it got a safety feature which causes it to turn off ? could anyone confirm this theory since its just a guess, because ive never seen the fan spin on it besides the 2 seconds at the start , ive temporarily set up a external fan pumping air into it to see if it last longer

The Gold-rated HX650 has a "Smart Fan" feature where the fan will only spin if it's needed. I guarantee you that with your system (8800 GT still, right?), the fan will never spin because it'll never need it. It's based on the SeaSonic G Series.

If it's the Bronze-rated HX650, then you have a problem if the fan isn't spinning.

i think its hx-650 gold and yea im leading towards its the power supply overheating , and i got a evga gtx 550ti graphics card now , (should update the info ) im leading towards the powersupply overheating since its been running smooth no issues 3 hours when using a external fan pumping air through the psu , and this morning it lasted 2 hours with no external fan intill it shutdown then when the psu was hot around 5 minutes and at most 10 minutes till it turns off ,

How hot does the PSU's case feel to you?

The 550 Ti doesn't pull enough power to really make this PSU's fan turn on. You could power your system with a quality-made 400W PSU.

Is it so hot that you could burn yourself? Or is it just really warm?
