[Wired] The World’s First Production Electric Supercar Is Here — All 740 HP of It - Page 5

Well, nice to see a new toy.

But Horse Power never was a problem with E cars, electric engines can produce alot more momentum then conventual burning engiens guess why all formula 1 cars have CARS to boost the top speed.

They accumulate, engine power over some laps to release it in one boost in a critical situation of the race. It is a Capcitor based battery in the car that stores power and throws it out onto the road when needed.

So why dont we all have it? Well we need a storage medium for the power and most batteries nowdays drive you 100-200miles then run dry a gas engine drives you 600-1200miles and then run dry.

So the gas engine drives you 6 times further with one charge.

We need A technology that makes combustion engines obsoledate and supports Ecars.

Well and that would be a kind of gasturbine hybrid car with some capacitors to store brake energy and overpower from the turbine, also the gas turbine need to burn gas aswell as gasoline. Also you need to be independent from tankstops and can refule everywhere.

A car with a gasturbine as generator can release alot of HP to the street, while still be able to run a 1000 miles with one tank stop.

Is CARS the same as KERS? Because not all of those are capacitor based. Some use a regular old metal flywheel.

I think he was speaking about KERS.

Would love to see this tech SCALED DOWN FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING. I know it's a "production" car, but it's supreme overkill. I understand the auto manufacturer can afford to pump a few of these out every year, maybe more if the demand is there, but the other way would be more important. MUCH cheaper, in the realm of a traditional mid-luxury sedan ($50-100k), with good mileage (300+), and enough room to transport the entire family plus their luggage.

That would be a car more worth buying then something that can't even make it to Portland from where I'm standing. My Focus can do that and back on a tank of gas tongue.gif

I understand I won't get that wish for a very long time, as long as money in this country is being shuffled around by professionals who only hold the best interest in the common man. And I won't say anymore, it would be too Political. Which is sad.

At least the car looks cool.

Awesome. Super cars like this are going to lead to major improvements in performance for electrical powered automobiles.

To me it looks like electric/hybrid powered automobiles have finally arrived and are here to stay.

Time to invest some money in battery technology stock.

Battery technology is going to push Electric/Hybrid cars to the limits and will attract alot of aftermarket money/power/interest.

I can see cars like the Ford CMAX Hybrid improving on gas mileage with battery upgrades in the near future.

You also have to remember thats 70kw of power hitting the tarmac vs potentially 10-30% of your current engine.

Driveline loss is not that high... Try 15-20% for parasitic losses.

The car you're looking for is the Tesla Model S. Its top model costs $87.4k and gets "only" EPA-rated 265 miles on a full charge. Tesla themselves rate it at 300 miles @ 55mph which I assume is under ideal conditions. The second tier model at $72.4k gives you the same range but gives up some horsepower and torque. Be prepared to get on a multi-year long waiting list though if you want to buy one tongue.gif

of course the chevelle gets put on blocks and tires off for the winter in the garage, the old impala is my daily driver. sun or snow. 600,000 miles and still going, shows what regular oil changes on an older car will do.

friend has a prius. it is such a pathetic wimpy car id never consider buying one.

for my petrol head friends in the thread:

Nice car thumb.gif

My dream car is a 71 Chevelle ss 454, although i would have a modern, fuel injected LSX based 454, probably an LS7 from the newer corvettes biggrin.gif Your's has the exact same paint scheme as my dream car too, lol. Carbs were dead when I was born so I grew up around fuel injection and didn't learn much about carburetors, and automotive computer diagnostics is my specialty which is the main reason I want a modern engine in a classic car

I did get a chance to drive one supercar. It was an early 2000 BMW Z8 and it was a rocket. Its a little bigger then a miata with a 5.0 liter 400 hp engine. A customer brought it to the the shop for an occasional running problem, and I'm the diag tech so I got to drive it several miles to try to get it to act up. It was fun to drive and it was scary quick, but I don't think I'd own one even if I could afford it. It was very uncomfortable and my 04 monte carlo had more options then it did, but I wouldn't mind borrowing it from someone to play with biggrin.gif

I personally like a balance of performance and comfort that a new camaro ss or challenger srt-8 gives
