The article said that the regular gas version was quicker than this electric version by 0.3 seconds. So in this case, I believe the gas one will be the one leaving the electric behind. While I do agree that electric motors are nice in that they give pretty much full torque immediately but you are comparing against a very powerful and highly tuned engine.

The gas engine in the SLS generates 622 hp with 468 lbf·ft @5500 while the Electric puts out 741 hp with ~738 lb·ft @ 0-13,000 rpm.

The electric motor is far superior to the gas engine. The reason the electric version is slower then the gas version is the added weight caused by the batteries. If you removed 2/3 of the batteries that electric SLS would be unbelievably quick. Of course doing so you would also loos 2/3 of the range making it wildly unpractical for other then track/dragstrip usage.

I'm pretty sure the electric motors torque drops off rapidly after somewhere around 5000RPM. Electric motors start at peak torque, continue for a way, but cannot keep up peak torque all the way to max RPM or even half of peak torque.

Well yes you are correct in the fact that electric motors peek torque is at lower RPM and that torque then falls off so saying you get 738 lb·ft all the time is incorrect. However when you look at the complete power train from engine to wheels the mater becomes slightly more complicated. As a gas engine provides torque at 5000RPM the end torque available at the wheels depends on the gear you are in. Every time you shift up the end torque falls. As gas engines provide the best torque in a very limited rpm a coming up to a hill for example might force you to down shift.

With a single gear electric drive train you get "maximum" torque all the time even tough that torque is not a fixed number. An electric motor will provide more an more torque the more spinning resistance is applied. When the motor reaches the maximum torque it will start to loos RPM until the torque can once more force the axle to spin faster. What this means for cars is that an electric car does not get bogged down the way a gas car does instead when you hit that hill your motor just starts to put out more torque as the speed falls off.

Also while using dirty energy to supply e- to the grid, whats the point of electric cars? The electricity is still coming from burning coal. Nice try!

Because burning huge amounts of coal in one spot is more efficient than having hundreds of thousands of tiny gasoline burners driving around. Something like 30% of grid enegry in the US is from solar, geothermal, nuclear, hydro, and other non-coal sources. Some countries are more, others less, and a handfull are 100% renewable.

You are evading my point. While the majority of our energy is derived from dirty tech, electric cars and hybrids are barely even stop-gap measures. They aren't focusing on the real problem. I realize the technology needs to be there when we do have clean grid power, and the tech already is where it needs to be. So now the emphasis needs to go towards actually fixing the real problem.

And I still think that car is hideous. thumb.gif
