MATX vs ATX and recommend me a MATX board please

post #1 of 14

hello guys,

I am out of the market for awhile, and recently i come across Silverstone S09 and fall in love with it.

I have a few questions..

is there a differences between MATX and ATX .. apart from size?

Can you guys recommend me a MATX motherboard? I am considering Asus MAXIMUS V GENE or MSI Z77MA-G45, please recommend if you have one more value for money =x

MSI Z77MA-G45 -> http://www.msi.com/product/mb/Z77MA-G45.htm
ASUS MAXIMUS V GENE -> https://www.asus.com/ROG/MAXIMUS_V_GENE/
l
Personally I already have a ASUS xonar essence STX, so GENE might not be applicable to me.

Primary difference between ATX and M-ATX is just that...size. You will get fewer PCI-E slots with a M-ATX as well, typically 2 pci-e x16 slots vs. 3-4 on an ATX board. Other than that, most of the higher end M-ATX boards have come a long way in VRM and overclock-ability so they are, for the most part, on equal playing fields in that aspect.

It really comes down to how many GPUs you want to use in a new build, if it's more than 2, or you are looking at quite a few expansion cards, then a M-ATX may be a tight squeeze for you. If a single card and a discrete sound card or internal tv tuner, then a small case with some good airflow and a M-ATX will be just fine.

As far as quality boards, you can't go wrong with the Maximus, premium price, but it's a proven board with stable voltage and good reviews both here and on other forums. I actually used a Z-77 Pro M board from ASRock and am pretty happy with it. Had it not been on sale as cheap as it was, I would have gone with ASUS, but I couldn't pass up the sale. Gigabyte also now makes a Sniper G1 in M-ATX also, I know the full size board had good comments on it, so I can only imagine the smaller version is of equal quality.

You can use the ASUS xonar essence STX in one of the Gene's pci-x 16 slots, no problem. thumb.gif

Essentially, they're both very similar both have 2 pci-e 3.0 x16 slots (Sli/CFX) both have a x4 slot, you could put your sound card in there. GB has 2 sata3, 3 sata2, MVG has 2 sata3, 4 sata4. Asus Looks better biggrin.gif They're both good overclocking boards. I think the soundcard would fit better on the Sniper, with 2 vid cards anyways.

You mean the Asus Noobtooth? Thermal armour is just a gimick, paying a premium just for looks.

If it ever breaks, and if Asus honors it. We all know how terrible Asus RMA can be.
