New to BOINC, Been a folder for a while, and decided to check out something different.

post #1 of 41
Thread Starter
Hiya guys and gals, like the title states, I have been folding for a while, and have decided to do something a little different. I am most likely going to ping pong back and forth between the two, however, I am going to dedicate some time to BOINC for a little while (6 months or so)

I have been reading guides and it seems that I am all setup and running for now. One thing I can't seem to figure out though, when a WU is completed, do I have to upload the results manually, or am I just not waiting long enough? It seems that they are piling up under the "Ready to report" category and they only send when I manually update the project.

I am currently running the Milkyway@Home units, and I may spread the work over multiple projects later on, if this proves to be stable and rockin' 'n rollin'.

Is there any way for me to tell what kind of performance I am getting? (Similar to PPD in F@H)
I know that 3rd party stats are most likely not going to update in my first few hours of BOINC'ing and I am not really worried about points so much, I just like to squeeze blood from a stone if possible.

Thank you in advance for any info.

Welcome, and thanks for joining us. Usually I BOINC and BGB, but I try to not miss the FaTs as well. Not so much for the prizes, but for participating in a team event where every bit counts. Sadly I missed the last FaT though.

No you dont have to upload manually, it will do it itself. It will upload your WU right away after you are done(check transfer tab when you finish a WU), but it stays as "Ready to report" until it updates(which is when it requests new WUs). But I like to manually click update near the end of BGBs so that I try to make sure they upload in time.

Also you can choose what Milkyway works on. As for CPU/GPU, you can go to their website, and go to your account and change that through preferences. You can also run multiple WUs on your graphics cards, and select which card will and wont crunch specific projects, but thats more involved.

There is sadly no real easy fast way to determine your PPD. You can compare your times to the team spreadsheet(will post when I find link) to see how you compare to similar hardware. Or you can just crunch for a couple days straight and check a 3rd party site for an average. Or you can get the raw results yourself and do the math yourself, which can be found at each projects web page under your account.

EDIT: here is the chart I suggested. And from it we have a 560, but non 448 core, getting 5:28 minutes and getting almost 50k. Better than I used to with my 460 before I bought these cards. I crunched a lot of hours with it, before realizing I could do 10x the work with a 500$ upgrade.

I would recommend running something else, as my 6970s do them in under a minute and get 255k per GPU. Obviously optimized for AMD, but other projects favor GTX cards. I would recommend picking a project out of this list for a project for your 560s, that peaks your interests. Or someone could recommend you a high PPD project, its been a while since I ran the green side.

Thanks for the reply!

Is there any reason that I would want to upload WU's manually? Like a quick return bonus?

Make sure to join the overclock.net team. in Boinc advanced section click on the projects tab then click on milkyway project then click on hompage. This will take you to the milkyway homepage. Sign in with your boinc username password and then click on the teams link. from there search and join overclock.net.

You can calculate your daily PPD using the average completion times for the milkyway work units or wait until the daily update and see how many PPD you have in the stats. Is your Boinc username Hacksword?

You can always place a cc_config.xml file in the Boinc program data folder to upload wu's immediately with the following code.
Code:
<cc_config>
   <options>
      <report_results_immediately>1</report_results_immediately>
   </options>
   <log_flags>
   </log_flags>
</cc_config>

That's great. smile.gif Also depending on which projects you are interested in, there are app_info files that you can use to tweak performance for projects. DarkRyder has one for moowrap on his site and their are others. I think their may be one for milkyway but I have never used one, maybe someone else here can shed some insight on it.

One more question... is it normal that my GPU's are hovering around 60% usage? They seem to be cranking out WU's just fine, but I am used to seeing them at 99% in F@H, if this is normal, cool.

looks like it is taking them about 4min26sec to complete.

Edit: Ok, so 2 questions, does it look like there is still a machine crunching SETI, somewhere out there under my name? If this is the case, I have no idea what machine that is....

http://www.allprojectstats.com/top.php?type=3&projekt=0&userid=2263990 the machine listed as active, is my laptop, but it has been powered off and in a closet for like 6 months. :/ kinda wierd
