Sorry for double posting, i read an article about a guy that made fsx run in crossfire mode.... Something about creating a profile in your catalyst then running the game somehow through amd catalyst? Has anyone tried doing this?i tried it but the game crashes within 2 minutes! I just think its a shame not all games are able to utliZe this technology,u kinda feel like u arent getting your moneys worth sometimes dont u guys agree?

When adding cards, you always suffer from diminishing returns. It it does not scale 100%.

It goes something like this
1 -> 2: +80%
2 -> 3: +50%

So going from 1 to 3 cards gives you 130% more peformance

Refer to this: http://www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-cards/zardon/asus-hd7970-tri-crossfire-review/7/

For 3DMark 11
1 card = 7823
2 cards = 13583
3 cards = 17552

1 -> 2 cards = +73%
2 -> 3 cards = +29%

1 -> 3 cards = +124%

Wow my initial guesstimates werent too far off lol

With the older chipset that the 69xx has you're most likely going to run into issues with scaling and probably bottlenecking. I think you'd really be doing more harm trying to get Trifire and especially Quadfire working properly with those cards.

I know that having 3 or 4 GPUs sounds and looks cool, I mean who wouldn't want to say they're running 4 GPUs, but in your case, and I know I said that the 6970 is a great card and I know you said you don't want to get a new card right now, but if you really want better game play and not just going after a fun project, you'll be much better off with two unlocked 7850s or one 7970. I honestly think that unless you're willing to put in the HOURS of time fine tuning everything that you'll have much better luck with just the two 69xx in crossfire than you would with 3 or 4 of them.

You're also going to run into issues with heat running all those 6 series cards. I know you said your getting them cheap but for what they're going for on eBay, I paid less for one of my 7870 Black Edition GPU WITH two games.

I don't mind investing the time 4 fine tuning that's not a problem at all- its not like I have anything better to do anyway haha.... Yeah from that point of view u are correct but I guess well see what 2 cards can do in crossfire- I will have to run some benchmarks and what not but in all honesty I don't even need a 2nd card because I get 60 fps minimum in every single game I play but I wanna do it just for the coolness like u were saying! U know theres really 1 card that's really tempting saw it on new egg- radeon 7870 myst edition- its supposed to be bad ass but I already have money invested in my 6970s so I might as well finish off this project before I begin another. The only 7000 series card id consider is 7870 myst edition, 7950, and of course 7970 and 7990! Anything under that and no offence towards anyone I don't think its worth the effort:D

Oh another card iam obsessed with- Radeon 6990! If I find one of these bad boys 4 a good deal iam picking it up! 1 question about the dual gpu cards guys..... the 6990 has 4gb of v-ram now is only 2gb per gpu or do I get to use the whole 4 gb??? Do u guys know what I mean? Like when u crossfire 2 6970s ull have a total of 4gb but u can only utlize 2gb not 4gb! Is it the same thing with the dual gpu cards? I could never understand how that works,hopefully someone can shed some more light on the subject lol Damm that kinda sucks with the scaling! u almost double on 2nd card but then it starts going downhill!

I thought you said originally that it was a 500W PSU and not a 600W PSU. Pay no attention at all to the amount of power it draws from the wall outlet, it's completely irrelevant except to your electricity bill.

I don't quite understand. There will be a sticker on the PSU with the combined output rating. That amount is the safe power output you can utilize. The amount of electricity from the wall outlet is irrelevant in every regard except for your electricity bill. Ignore the efficiency at this point, it has nothing to do with the amount of power output available.

CrossFire causes a more headaches then theyre worth. When you CrossFire - you dont magically double up on VRam....the 2GB is shared.

Simplify and get a 7970 for now or CF your 6970s and deal with

1. Power
2. Heat
3. Microstutter
4. Not all games support CFX
4a. When they do, it might not be optimized

etc

The 7870 black edition is faster than the myst edition, at least by specs. Plus PowerColor doesn't have the greatest rep for QC.

The 6990 was/is a great card and a powerhouse but it costs more than an OC'd 7970 and in most tests still comes in second to the 7970.

Take it from me, someone who is never satisfied, or at least not for long, with a build, don't waste your money. Stick with the crossfired 69xx you have, sell them and buy a good 7970 and still have left over money, or wait until the 8000 series comes out and drops in price a bit.

That's my opinion.
