GPU Funny Noise Under Load

Alright I finished my build last night and leak tested it when I was sleeping and no problems and im pretty happy with it considering its my first WC loop biggrin.gif But I do have one problem as stated above the GPU will make a funny noise when its undre any kind of load. I discovered the noise in Heaven benchmark and just incase it was just had something to do with the program I tested it in Skyrim also and obviously it still made the noise. But it is literally only when its under load, in Skyrim when I paused the game it stopped and Heaven benchmark it stops making the noise at the loading screens. The closest thing I could compare it with would be the noise you hear in a cartoon when a persons face is sliding against glass/ a window tongue.gif I am using EK's WB and my GPU is the 7970. I am hopefully gonna post a build log within the next few days as soon as I finish the video and I could record the noise and put it in the video if you would need me too. Thanks for helping me out

Sounds like you have a case of coil whine. One of my cards has minor coil whine when under load. Really nothing you can do about it. If it's still under warranty you might be able to RMA the card for a new one.

How could it be coil whine one my gpu when I have a waterblock on it? I turned the fan speed to 0 but it still makes the noise. Also this is the first time it has ever made the noise, when i actually had the gpu using the reference fan it never made the noise. I really dont want to RMA the card since I just finished my WC build. Are you sure its coil whine since I just installed a EK Waterblock? If so is there a way around it besides RMA'ing the card?

Coil whine has nothing to do with the cooler, it is a resonance issue in the electical components (coils) of the card. Nothing you can do about it.

The chances are that it was there before you put the water block on the card, you just couldn't hear it over the noise of the fan.

Coil whine has nothing to do with the cooler. It's produced by coils in transformers on the coard itself and sometimes in PSU's. Maybe you just didn't hear it before because the fan louder with the stock cooler? Putting a waterblock on does not produce coil whine.

Being watercooled or not makes no difference. It doesn't have anything to do with the fan speed. It may have had a whine before but you couldn't hear it over the stock HSF. It's just components on the board making the whine from being stressed at load. AFAIK, there really is no guaranteed fix for it. You just have to deal with it or RMA. There are a few things you can try to decrease it. Read through this thread and see if any of those help at all.

As you know, my card had pretty bad coil whine. i was able to fix it simply by letting my pc stay overnight on a crysis main menu screen, where the coil whine was at its worst. Did this 3 nights in a row and now its whisper quiet.

Ill update this into the main post as well, someone else might find it useful.
Maybe this would work for me? Seing as how I dont really have any way of RMA'ing my card (I bought it from a store used off of Ebay). Its worth a shot and I already saw that thread about changing my overclock and voltage to try to stop the coil whine but it dosent seem to work. Also I have seen that some use hot glue or nail polish, but it seems for the most part this dosent work on the 7970. So looks like for the next few nights I will let my gpu run on load to try to stop the coil whine. I'll update if it works.

I had a case of bad coil whine and it slowly went away/subsided. Play with your clock a bit see if that helps.
