Q6600 and RAM for $70... worth it for a sit in the corner folding machine?

I would probably put a mid range GTX card with it.

Got a guy at work with the chip and ram but I would need to grab a 775 board. Still $70 seems fair for a 4 core with memory.

Depending on the memory and what kit it is, that old DDR2 memory could be worth $70 alone. As far as a folding machine for $70 you will end up paying more for it in electricity for it over time, BUT it would make a decent backup pc or a pc for a child.

Fair enough. The chip and ram came out of a donor Dell XPS 710 so I would expect just basic samsung ram. I don't think his board works but the chip and ram tested ok in a brief swap to a working system.

I guess it would make a decent backup system. I just gave away my Intel 8400 to a buddy and it still works fine for his use.

I have purchased 4 Q6600's lately (I had 4 775 boards and that was the best processor I could afford).I paid right at 60 shipped for each. I see it as a cheap way to get into 4 cores (AMD comparison would be the 955). I run my 275 folding gpu's off them when they are not simple desktop machines or Netflixs machines (4 cores on a Netflixs machine keeps the individual core utilization percentage down).Folding on the cpu (be it the Q6600 or the 955) is not an option I consider reasonable, but you can keep the program loaded if you happen to want to cpu fold for 5.5KPPD or so.For me the lowest cpu I fold on is the i7 920.These 275's I use just fold and fold and no extra cooling is needed. You would need better cooling if you wanted to fold on the Q6600 or 955.

EDIT: My economic standing puts me firmly in yesterdays equipment. I can still do OK if I happen to turn everything on.I just moved to a place with inclusive utilites and refrigerated air,we are supposed to be conservative with electricity use. This clause was in my lease.
